I am sick with a head cold which is moving into my chest. I am wondering what natural remedies I can use to clear this up before I get really sick.
Do any of you use herbal remedies when bfeeding? If so, which ones? I am always concerned about safety.
Thanks!

Molly I use ALOT of herbs when pregnant and breastfeeding, but mainly the great variety comes through the mixture (5 different extracts per mix) my herbalist makes for me. The thing is that when you write something on herbs you have to publish 'precautions' and while plenty of antidotal evidence with experienced users proves it's safety in pregnancy and when breastfeeding, it is another thing to state it publicly without proper studies conducted.
Did you have any particular herbs you were wishing to use in mind? It very well might be one I've used in pregnancy and breastfeeding...
Certainly Echinacea is fine, I'd have to have a look and see what other herbs are good for chesty things...I'll try to get back.

Thanks Anne and Angie. I am feeling really miserable. And my poor little baby gets startled and screams every time I cough or blow my nose.
I was looking at this site that Shonda Parker links to, but there is just so much I don't know. I have an Elderberry cough syrup at home, but it has Mullien in it which I can't find information on anywhere.
Anything that will help blast this cold would be greatly appreciated. There is no time for being sick right now.

I'm sorry and very sympathetic. I just told Dave last night that I've either been sick or caring for someone sick since the beginning of December...blech.
I don't know about Mullien. I'm wondering if we can find someone with the book The Nursing Mother's Herbal who can look it up? Many La Leche League Leaders have access to this book. Maybe you can cross-post to Mothering and/or Mother Nurture?
I'm running out the door for the day...and praying for your relief!
Love,

I haven't gotten back Molly, 'cause I've come down with a head cold now!
Mullien is excellent for rubbing into chests, I have a 'garlic and mullien' oil just for this purpose and popping it into sore ears.
Good old Chamomile is good for chesty things and sage tea as well. How about some Nettle tea for building up your consitution and resistance? It's a great blood purifier.

That's it!...Mullien is great for ears! Our family has used Wally's Ear Oil for years with much success.

How are you doing now Molly? Not too late for a good remedy? Red Rasberry Leaf tea and lots of it. It is a very safe herb, one that is renowned in pregnacy and in the post-partum period. But it is also good for the common cold, flu, bronchial problems.

Just wanted to mention to be careful with sage if you try it while nursing, I've read that it's a common herb to use to help 'dry you up' when weaning....
