I think I have a cavity that needs attention. It's been a "watch" for over a year now, and they didn't do x-rays last time b/c I was pregnant. It's starting to hurt.
My midwife said that if it really hurts and they want to x-ray it, to use double-shielded x-ray protection. I'm 6.5 months pregnant.
Is this a big deal? Anything else to be aware of? I know everyone has a different comfort level w/these things, but just wanting some feedback.

well I had to have a root canal.. right after I found out I was pregnant.. waiting until later wasn't an option. (Ideally they prefer to do work during second trimester if it must be done)
We did have to do xrays.. but the dental office here has the new much lower radiation type.. under normal conditions they don't even use the covers anymore.. and we still did a double cover on me for it.. and as few as we could.
infection in something like that can be very nasty for a pregnancy (tooth infections can cause miscarriages from what I understand) so yeah.. not treating it may be worse for baby than treating.
Also, you might not want to wait long.. you're getting to the point where it's not going to be good to be on your back for long periods of time.. baby is big enough to put more pressure on the major blood vessels when you're on your back.

Some offices do have new digital radiography which is less radiation exposure.

LOL, that thread is almost a year old and I finally JUST got the temp. crown put on. I go tomorrow for the permanent one. My dentist and OB said second trimester work was best if you needed it. I only avoided for so long because I gagged too much, and the tooth wasn't hurting. It became a pretty deep cavity, though, so a lot of work was needed now.
I can't add much more than was already said.

I just did this. We waited til the very beginning of the 3rd trimester, my dentist did not do an x-ray at all. It was a very small cavity though.
I will say that with the beginning of each of my (now 5) pregnancies, I have to have a central line inserted requiring the use of an x-ray to navigate the arteries. They double wrap me. There hasn't been a problem yet.
I think I'd ask if the x-ray is really necessary. If you know there is a cavity there, perhaps you don't need one. If the dentist decides you do need an x-ray, I think if you take extra precautions you and the baby should be just fine!

Just went through this with a root canal and eventually ended up pulling the tooth. My ob and dentist assured me all will be well and to wait could have caused some serious issues in the pregnancy. I ended up with 4 xrays, a round of antibiotics, 4 times to be numbed and a day of Tylenol 3.
This is what I kept telling myself, there are women who take their prenatals faithfully and only eat this and such and have some complication with themselves or the baby....and there are teenagers who live off mountain dew and dorritos and may even smoke, and they still deliver healthy babies.

During my last pregnancy I had to have a cavity filled and/or a filling replaced. They didn't have to do any x-rays.
I am praying for you!

Has anyone's dentist ever told them that if they are nursing and get numbed they can't nurse for 24 hrs till the Novocaine (or whatever) is out of their system??? Mine has.
So I got a cavity filled without numbing. 
But now, I need my bottom two wisdom teeth removed BADLY and I figure if this is true I'll never do it since I'll be pregnant or nursing for a while-- God willing of course.

nope.. my dentist has checked into what meds I could have while nursing and dealt with it that way.
Also, I would check Dr. Hale's website when any doc told me anything like that. Most doctors aren't experts in how meds cross into breastmilk (Dr. Hale is) and so they always err on the side of caution telling you not to nurse for 24-48 hrs after a med.
You'll have to go into the website as a guest but there's been so many answers posted it's usually easy to find fairly common meds like novacaine or such.

Also, if you call a La Leche League Leader, she should be able to look up information about specific medications for you from Dr. Hale's book. A LLL Leader can't advise you about whether or not you should take the med since she's not a health care professional, but she can give you the information you need to make a decision one way or the other.
When I had my gallbladder removed 7 years ago, I got 3 or 4 different stories about when it would be "safe" to nurse my baby again! I finally called my daughter's pediatrician (who was more up-to-date on breastfeeding and meds than any of the docs at the hospital!) and he said to go ahead and nurse!
