Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am 19 weeks pregnant and I think the cold virus is slowly hitting two of my children. Can I take extra vitamin c while pregnant and what about echinicea, is that a no no during pregnancy? I want to boost myself up so I don't get sick!
Thanks!

Try to stick to food sources. Drink lots of extra orange juice, eat your green veggies, stay hydrated. I don't think an extra C pill would be too bad, but I never do it, the OJ seems to work fine. Odwalla and Bolthouse also both make "Immune Booster" smoothies you can buy at nicer grocery stores. The "C Monster" smoothies by Odwalla work particularly well for me.

I have no idea if Echinacea is okay, I've never had the nerve to try it while pregnant.

ETA: Oh, and try eating some pre-emptive chicken soup -- the more herbs and spices, the better!

while pregnant you can take up to 5000mg vit. C (reference - Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Balch)... I use it all the time for hay fever symptoms.

I would definately do the chicken soup (add lots of fresh garlic) and elderberry.. echinacea boosts an immune system that is low.. but doesn't really boost you above "normal" while elderberry is an anti-viral and a specific against the flu.

I've never had trouble with taking a little extra vitamin C and echinacea while pregnant (make sure it isn't combined w/Goldenseal). Like Jodie said, the echinacea boosts the immune system, so I try to take it if I notice one of the kids is getting a runny nose or sneezing or if I've been running on high for a few days w/out sleeping well, kind of a "just in case" dose.

And I also say yes to good homemade chicken soup or perhaps a good, spicy chili. Garlic, onions, and cayenne are great for cold season, and I always seem to crave them when I'm feeling a little run down.

The trick is really to make sure your immune system doesn't get down, so boosting now is a really good idea. Also, teach the kids to sneeze/cough into their sleeve/crook of their arms and all of you be vigilant about hand-washing. Those little things can go a long way.
