Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

There is a strain of staph infection (MRSA) that is the big topic in Virginia schools right now. Apparently, two children have died and many schools have been shutting down to try to disinfect and avoid an outbreak. Two children in our county have been diagnosed with it. I have a son in public high school.

Is anyone familiar with this? What should we be doing as a family to protect ourselves?

With my sil in the hospital with an infection, which thank God isn't MRSA, the kids are really nervous. I am trying to stay logical, but with a baby on the way soon, we just do not need any more health problems.

I just was listening to our news, and they mentioned 6 confirmed cases of this in High Schools in AZ.

A report I heard just recently, emphasized that rather than the deep cleans and disinfecting that schools are doing, a better route might be to go over basic hygiene especially good hand washing.

Also, regular and consistent cleaning of areas such as locker rooms and bathrooms also seems to be key.

I would emphasize good hand washing and fingernail care and make sure dirty laundry in lockers comes home to be cleaned. The only other things I remember being mentioned is that any wounds or cuts should be covered.

As a society, physicians need to stop handing out antibiotics for every little illness - I think, in general, this is getting better. Also when antibiotics are prescribed it's important to finish the prescription. The "MR" stands for "multi-resistant". These are super-strains of bacteria that have become immune to current antibiotics. This is happening due to the over prescription of antibiotics and not finishing recommended courses which sometimes allows the infection to come back stronger.

There is also some thought that the heavy use of antibiotics in animal feeds may also be contributing to the problem. And personally, I also wonder if all these "anti-bacterial" soaps have made the problem worse rather better. Give me good old fashioned soap and water!

My dh is a high school teacher and they sent out a call last week to all staff and parents that the school was going to be disinfected over the weekend. This was a precautionary measure due to a report of a case in another school in our county. I think there is a bit of a frenzy about this now - not sure how much the media attention is really helping - everything is so dramatized in the news.

yep, it's going through our schools too and is on the news.

I think it's important to do ALL those things. Disinfect the school, increase hygene, treat wounds ASAP and cover them, don't pop antibiotic like candy or get them and not finish them. It isn't on the recomendations, but I also think redoubling efforts at boosting their immune system wouldn't hurt either. This is probably the most expensive treatment - better nutrition from healthier sources!

Molly, since I'll be having a c-section in less than 9 weeks, both dh and I are a bit more concerned having an open wound in a hospital at this time.

Some of this is hype -- MRSA is a problem, but staph bacteria are always around, and this scare is just a reminder of how important good hygiene is. Wash hands, wash hands, wash hands.

I found these articles helpful. Just because you get a staph infection doesn't mean it's the MRSA.
