Last night didn't have a lot of sleeping because pregnancy heartburn reared its head.

I have to admit that I'm pretty spoiled and usually don't suffer from preg. heartburn that much (maybe because I'm tall??) But this is the earliest -- my due date is still four months away!!

So I discovered that... licking my fingers making chocolate chip cookies followed by shepherd's pie with salad doesn't go over well. (Duh... but I didn't know I was going to be plagued this early!)

Does anyone have suggestions for menus and other remedies that have helped them? Usually I just have this the last month, so I don't have to many remedies in my limited memory stores.

Mine was so bad this last pregnancy that I just took Tums - and plenty of them. My doctor assured me that it wouldn't hurt the baby. I took two-three at a time and usually tried to wait until bedtime. I was able to handle the discomfort during the day but at night it drove me crazy. I know I had to take them every night during the last trimester and even some before that. I never found the foods that caused the problem because it seemed I had it no matter what I ate! By the way, my baby was born with lots of hair! I know that's an old wives tale, but it sure came true here!

A local midwife told me that Tums can cause kidney stones when you are not pregnant, and calcify your placenta when you are. She recommends liquid calcium, as it is used much more efficiently by your body.

Oh, I wouldn't worry too much - I doubt that a moderate amount would cause problems, unless it was something that you were prone too anyway. But if you are someone like me who needed to take something for heartburn relief several times a day from the 4th month on during pregnancy, it can really add up!

YIKES it's a wonder both of my placentas weren't hard as rocks!

I had terrible heartburn with my pregnancies, so the point of trying to sleep semi-upright in a chair through most of my pregnancy with my daughter. The doctor recommended Tums or another OTC heartburn remedy (Prilosec? check with your doctor or midwife). He also suggested avoiding fatty foods as much as possible. I used to eat many small meals (more like constant snacks) to try to keep my stomach 'even'. I wish I could tell you these strategies worked well for me, but I am hoping they will work well for you.

Last pregnancy I had it early and I had it really bad. I had to take Zantac daily. Heartburn didn't really describe the stabbing chest pain I had all day.

This pregnancy I'm doing so much better. Only sporadic problems (so far). But like Patty suggested, eat less fatty foods, don't overeat. Caffeine, tomato foods, acidic foods like fruit juices, spicy foods all aggravate the symptoms. Warm liquids also aggravate existing pain.

Try to stay upright an hour or two after eating, don't lie down right away. And bending over REALLY aggravates the pain.

If you're hesitant about Tums, there are some natural enzymes and stomach ease you could find at the health food store.

Mint is often touted to ease the stomach, but it actually relaxes the opening to the esophagus even more, thereby letting more acid aggravate the lining. Try to avoid mint!

When you're having one of those nights, if you have a reclining chair, it might be better to just go sleep in that, keeping your head elevated slightly.

Papaya enzyme. Works better than ANYTHING else I have tried and having heartburn with all 10 pregnancies I have tried A LOT. I am pretty sure it was someone here who suggested it. And it's pretty inexpensive to boot. I can get a bottle of 250 tabs for about $3.

A little bit of Mylanta always puts the fire out for me. Also be sure to drink some dairy WITH foods that are likely to cause a problem. That goes a long way in preventing it.

Papaya enzymes helped me some, but I had to take them right after I ate or they didn't work for me. I am super short and the heartburn starts early for me and it is really bad.

Carrots and apples are supposed to have natural antacids. I can't eat apples so I would have carrot sticks next to the bed and crunch away during the night! That only worked up to a point, though and now I'm popping the Mylanta rolltabs- which have less of the heavy stuff in them but still seem to work.

A friend swore by uncooked lentils- just grinding away at a few. I think it's probably the release of saliva that keeps the heartburn a bit at bay with that one.

Also, there is an accupressure point- google and see if you can find it. A bit harder to work out when you are pregnant but it did work a bit for me.

some people actually swear by vinegar- they say it can be too little acid that does it sometimes. I haven't been game to try that one.

A lot of the problem in pregnancy is slowed digestion.. reducing acid with antiacids can actually increase the problem (so you keep taking more and more)

I haven't used it but I have a friend that has.. and she'd take a spoon of plain mustard.

I know I tend to eat spicy food and continue to do so in pregnancy and I usually get more heartburn from eating bread than I do the spicy food.

But the liquid calcium is wonderful.. I use Vita Vista brand if you can find it.. and it doesn't cause any problems for me with kidney stones.. which other types of calcium will (I think it's because it has vit. D in it.. plus some other things needed for your body to use the calcium)

I was just about to post a new topic starting with...
does anyone else go to their room crying because of pregnancy related heartburn? (I feel so wimpy!) But, instead, I did a search and found this thread.

Once I realized that dairy was causing first trimester effects in my third trimester and cut it out entirely from my diet, I experienced a very favorable side effect. My unbearable (for me) heartburn subsided.

That's good to know Helen. I have to admit now that I'm off sugar (and mostly off caffeine) - I don't notice heartburn either. But I also hope that I've been dropping!!

Are you keeping very well hydrated? Our Homeschool Umbrella (because of government regulations) puts out the coolest magazine. They just had an article about making sure you drinking enough water, and they said heartburn ws often caused by being dehydrated... I wasn't keeping up on my water over Christmas and had terrible heartburn, which cleared up when I started drinking Litre bottles of water again.   

So just a thought...
