Does anyone have a good source for determining what herbs are safe during pregnancy? I am developing a nasty cough and most of what I have in the house herbal remedies and cough syrups. I also have various teas such as throat coat and one for respiratory health. Of course, everything says consult a physician.
Thanks!

I use Prescription for Nutritional Healing a lot.. it often gives warnings for use in pregnancy.
Also just doing a search on the individual herbs online will often pull up info.. hmmm

I hope those are the ones I think they are it's been a while since I used them.
lemon and honey are great for a cough and sore throat.. and I believe are useable during pregnancy.. a nice hot lemonade (make with real lemon or lemon juice and at least partly honey for the sugar) is wonderfully soothing.

I don't have a specific book but I do know Golden Seal is supposed to be a no-no.

If you use homeopathy you don't have to worry about side effects.

I recommend "The Naturally Healthy Pregnancy" by Shonda Parker. She also has a book called "Mommy Diagnostics". She's formulated some herbal tinctures and what not available at Tri-Light Herbs and Mother's Choice.
For dry irritating coughs - wild cherry bark. She recommends a combination that contains: white pine, wild cherry, spikenard root, whole elder berries, cinnamon chips, licorice root.
For wet or loose coughs, a combination that contains: mullein, wild cherry bark, chestnut, astragalus root, peppermint, coltsfoot, plantain, chickweed, pleurisy root, elecampane root, horehound. (also available from Tri-Light and Mother's Choice.) But then she goes on to say that moms will want to be careful (or avoid) with this combination due to the coltsfoot. Go figure. I seem to remember reading somewhere that one is available w/o the coltsfoot. Perhaps on one of the sites.
marshmallow root is very soothing to respiratory mebranes b/c of the high amounnt of mucilage in the plant. It is best combined with other expectorants and used as a tea. A tea may may be made by combining licorice, marshmallow and plantain with a small amoount of thyme.
I like the marshmallow root and licorice root mixture for sore throats.
Mullein is supposed to be great for getting rid of mucous, like those in head colds, I believe. Haven't tried it yet though.
