Has anyone ever had a HIDA scan on the gallbladder before? It's supposed to be used to see if the gallbladder contracts properly.
Also, for those of you who have had your gallbladder removed, were there any side effects from the surgery? More restricted eating, etc?
For those of you who decided to keep your gallbladder, why did you decide that and are there things I can do to relieve the nausea, reflux, pain, etc.?
I would appreciate as much advice as I can get, I'm pretty miserable !
I should add I don't have gall stones, they've already done the ultrasound. I have a lot of reflux, I can't eat much, nausea too occasionally.
Thanks in advance!

Suzanne,
I had my gallbladder removed in January of 2001. I had gallstones. They were discovered during a sonogram of my first baby. They never caused me any problems, but the surgeon I saw told me that they would cause problems (meaning gallbladder attacks) eventually and could even cause life-threatening complications if a gallstone became lodged in one of the ducts.
I decided to have the gallbladder removed after my 1st dd was born, when she was about 18 months old. I had outpatient laproscopic surgery. There was some pain from the surgery for a few days, but not major. I also felt very tired for a few months after the surgery. I wasn't advised to eat a restricted diet after the surgery, but I had severe intestinal cramping after the births of my 2nd and 3rd children, particulary when I ate fried foods. It lasted for a few months and then went away. I don't know if it was related to the surgery or not. I talked to my doctor about it and he didn't know what might cause it, either. He advised me to keep a food diary and talked about doing a colonoscopy if the cramping continued, but, like I said, it just stopped after a few months.
So, that was my experience. I hope you're able to find some relief, soon, one way or the other!
Dawn

I would NEVER have anything removed unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. There are things you can do (diet) to help and/or elimate gallbladder problems. PM me for more info if you want.
(But, you MUST be willing to make permanent changes. Most people are not.)

Kathy

Our dd 21 just had hers removed in march .
It came after the birth of her ds . It is something all the women in dh family have had to deal with .
Jasmine lost so much wieght at first they actually did not beleive she was in pain and said she was anorexic but the ultra sound scan tech knew right away what kind of pain she'd been in .
She went to hospital several times and recieved morphine so I think the pain must be bad .
They scheduled to remove it . I had my doubts .But what alternative .Really watch your diet .well she obviously already does that and is why she was a toothpick size
So she had it removed . Its been months since the removeal and she is still in pain when eating certain foods . I'm not sure if it is because she went from having absolutly no fat to introducing fat and other foods she'd been away from but this does not seem normal .
I'm worried they nicked something or she has an ulcer now .
I more and more am looking to go see a naturoath dh insurance covers it . I'm at a loss as what dd could do though we'll have to see .
My mil and sil both have had no trouble since having thier gal bladders removed .
I'll be interested in knowing more info thats for sure .
Much Love , Rox

I had my gallbladder removed in June 2004. I had gallstones in my common bile duct and that led to pancreatitis (and an additional procedure).
I haven't had to really restrict my eating, although really heavy, greasy foods do sometimes give me some digestive trouble (a burger king double cheeseburger, with onion rings and a coke was always a killer). But I can't remember the last time I had any trouble.
I'll pray for you, Suzanne. I remember how miserable those gallbladder attacks can be.

Thanks for the replies.
Has anyone had difficulty swallowing with their gallbladder problems? I'm having so much difficulty I'm on a liquid diet. It's possible the reflux is so bad that it's caused the difficulty swallowing.
Anyway, thanks again for your replies. I'll keep you posted.

I went through six years of agony with my gallbladder before it was properly diagnosed. I never had gall stones, so regular US did not pick it up. I finally found a doctor who ordered the correct scan. I had surgery a week later and am still thankful for it. Yes, I had restricted my diet entirely to nothing but steamed vegetables and rice - no fat, nothing fried, no meat, etc. It wasn't enough. it helped, but I still had attacks nearly every day that put me on the floor for an hour or more.
I was fortunate to have the laparoscopic surgery, went home the same day and was back at work within 3 days. This was 11 years ago. Most foods do not bother me, but I cannot tolerate extremely fatty things like bacon, high fat ice cream, etc. It's OK b/c I never cared for those anyway. Believe me, anything that you can't eat after having gb surgery you can't eat if you keep the diseased gb either!
By the way, after surgery, the surgeon told me that my gallbladder had previously ruptured in at least 3 places. I would not wish this pain on anyone!
good luck!

I have had the HIDA scan, which did not show any problem with my gall bladder, but the doc said it doesn't mean there isn't a problem.
Meanwhile, I haven't eaten beef in a year and a half, as I get extremely sick when I do. Fried foods do make me nauseated with some vomiting. I have to watch what I eat.
My sis had hers out and still has problems with some foods. But her gb was in really bad shape, very evident on the HIDA scan.
My mum, grandmum and nephew all had theirs out. As far as I know, only my nephew has had some residual digestive problems. My mum and grandmum's were removed "the old fashioned way."
I may still need it out, but at this point it isn't causing horrible pain. I have had only one pain episode, and by the time I got to the er, got checked in, waited, saw a doc, and finally had the ultrasound, the pain was gone.
The surgeon I saw re. the gallbladder said that if it is bad and if I left it in, it could cause complications.
Sorry I have no more info to help you!
Keep us posted, Suzanne!
God Bless,
Stacy in MI

I come from a family with a long history of gall bladder disease. I don't mean to make light, but its gotten so we joke about the Cuban cooking that destroys everyone's gall bladder and my father (Peruvian) jokes that his was mearly an innocent bystander.
In any case, I remember my mother's gall bladder attacks as a child. They were horrible. She finally had hers removed after my sister was born in 1980. No laproscopic procedure for her. She eats everything. Her sister and brother had theirs removed. Her other sister is terrified of medical procedures and so lives on a VERY limited diet and drinks tons of pear nectar/juice. Both my cousins had their's removed.
Most recently my father had his removed laproscopically. Very simple procedure and he now enjoys eating just about everything. The thing to keep in mind is that the foods that will cause you the most problems are foods we should eat in moderation anyway. Now it looks like my sister is up next.

I had mine removed in 2005 - laproscopic surery. Everything went well and since I tend to eat low fat anyway, I have had no problems with diet and side effects.
I'll keep you in thoughts and prayers.
