Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a set of alphabet from Lauri. I bought them years ago when my dd (now 13) was little. Have anybody used these in place of the movable alphabet? do you think they can work?

Looking around on the internet I see that with the movable alphabet you can use little objects or cards for word building. What do you use? if you use objects where do you get them? if you use cards, where do you get them?

Thanks,

Natalia

Pretty much any letters can be used. The perk of the Mont. ones is that the vowels are colored differently than the consonants. That's it. I use a set of letter tiles I picked up at Walmart for less than five dollars.

There are printable sets of pink, blue, and green phonics word cards at the montessorimaterials.org site. You can have the child use those and match the letters to the labels. Later they can use the tiles alone to spell the words.

Thanks Kim for your prompt reply!

I have seen the printable pink, blue and green cards. I wasn't sure how to use them though. When I print them, do I cut the images and the labels separate?

Thanks,

Natalia

You want to print two sets of each. One set stays together. The other set you cut the labels off for matching. Its a lot of ink granted but cheaper than buying. and you can use the moveable alphabet too.

Kim : )

Natalia,

Like you I was interested in trying out the movable alphabet. I just didn't want to buy a wooden set if my son wouldn't use it so I printed out the letters and pink word set. It turned out well (here)   and inspired me to make a moveable phonogram set for my oldest daughter. It was definitely worth the ink! Thanks for the suggestion, Kim!

Marjorie,

It did turn out great!

I ended up printing (and laminating ) the pink cards from montessorimaterials but instead of the movable alphabet I am using some Lauri. I already had them from when my oldest was little so I decided to use them. They don't have the vowels and consonants in different colors but it is working fine for now.

The moveable alphabet is something that I think we are getting close to here, but I'm not sure how to determine if ds is ready or not. Kim, you talked about the pink word cards for matching. Should the child be able to actually read the words first, or is it mostly a matching exercise? Sorry for the dumb question!

No if they want to do the work, whether they can read or not, it would benefit them. They see from the pic what the word sounds like and then are learning that this particular combination of letters make those sounds. So it can work as pre-reading or to practice the spelling both.

Thanks Kim! I'll get my moveable alphabet out. I've been "saving" it but I don't want to miss a window of opporunity! By the way, mine are blue and red but they are actually foam (sort of like Lauri) and have magnets on the back. They work really well and were rather inexpensive from Rainbow.
