Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dh needed me to come up with my home education proposal and budget for next year, so I've been browsing online and writing plans and lists. Inspired by previous threads I have challenged myself to make more of my materials, and in that spirit made a hundreds cahrt using small white bathroom tiles and a Sharpie marker. The girls are really loving working with it!

Some things, however, are beyond my capabilities, or perhaps my imagination, so I can always appreciate a good sale. This one was good enough that I thought others might benefit. Until June 15th, The Montessori Outlet is having a 25% off everything sale, which really dents the price of some of these materials. I hope it helps someone!

Michelle Leroux zamzamgarden@yahoo.com is on the Montessori Swap list...she is a homeschooler too and she sells Montessori materials at a very low cost. You might want to contact her for the particulars and a price list. FWIW
HTH!

Katie,

The tile/sharpie hundreds board is a great project. Did you find the directions here? I made one for our family a few months ago and the kids are really enjoying it, especially my kindergartner. I think the entire project cost about $6 for the tiles and $1 for the Sharpie.

What are you using to store the tiles?

I love that tile chart! I wanted to do that myself, but we were already using something else I made...One thing that my kiddoes liked was making our own hundreds chart out of a pocket chart, index cards and a sharpie...large motor boy loves pocket charts so I use them as much as I can...I keep it set up in a nook where he can be on his own....when the baby comes along and eats #47 it is easy to replace. We store the cards in a plastic hardware-type drawer. That makes it easy to toss the strays in...when I am not using the cards, I band them up and put them away (large lined baskets on the the top of our bookcases divided by subject) until the next kid needs them. My ds is starting to call all my sharpie projects "sharpie school" I do a LOT with index cards and my bunch of sharpie markers...

...and that darned magic eraser works real well for the couple of times the toddler ran off with one and decorated the house...and her body...it is kinda like a practical life lesson too...shoot! I am rambling...but you get the picture...my point is...

REAL LIFE happens to my MONTESSORI world more often then I would like...but I have learned to adapt.

And while making materials, I can make things quickly using every day objects and the kids love the innovation so it works all around. SO many of these materials the kids use for such a SHORT period of time...sometimes only once...so I like to make my actions count! I purchased the longer life ones like the pink tower, or the broad stair...but made the shorter life ones...If you are looking to make a new material...just ask...we could brainstorm our way through making a material on the cheap that can be as elaborate or as simple as your need or taste may be!

I keep a box of recycled items for materials making too...want me to share it's contents?? Just ask

I hadn't seen this one yet! We have tons of white 4 x 4 cermaic tiles leftover from my dh's various construction projects! I love this idea and so easy and visual and BIG!!! Thanks so much, oh and how about shoe boxes or those clear plastic crates from a Home depot store to keep them in?? Just a thought.

Well I didn't exactly follow directions but I do recall seeing Suzanne's tile hundreds board on one of her web pages, so the credit does go to her, I think! It all fit perfectly in a basket I had (one of a set of nesting rectangular baskets), so I reassigned some old coloring books to the great round file in the sky and now it holds the 100s tiles.

My dd2 helped decorate a tile and her body with a Sharpie while I made this. Glad I'm not alone!

Thanks for the link to Michelle's Montessori page, Donna Marie. I'm going to browse there this evening.
