Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have looked for a cinnamon dough recipe that doesn't call for applesauce, and had no luck, so I decided to concoct my own and it worked! So if anyone else has little hands that need to stay busy with something that smells sweet (but don't eat!) during the holidays, here's one idea:

The basic homemade play-dough recipe :
-1 c. water
- 1 T. vegetable oil
- 1/2 c. salt
- 1 T. cream of tartar
- 1 c. flour
(optional food coloring - this doesn't apply here because the cinnamon darkens the dough)

To this I added about 1/2 c. ground cinnamon and reduced the flour to about 3/4 c.

Heat the water, oil, salt & tartar until warm. Remove from heat and add flour and cinnamon, mixing well and then kneading until smooth. You might need to add a bit more flour so the dough is smooth and not sticky.

The cream of tartar makes this dough last for up to 6 months if you keep it in a sealed container or ziplock. I had the cinnamon on hand from another craft. One of the ~ 3 oz. "5th Season" containers from Walmart ($.50!) was about 1/2 c.

Enjoy!

Sounds like a great recipe, Kiera. You are very creative. Glad you posted it. I love scented play dough (like the Kool-aid ones).

Here is another one that would be great for Christmas play - Peppermint playdough. Have seen it making the rounds on Pinterest.

Any other holiday scent ideas for dough?

And I was thinking that one could sub the 1/2 cup cinnamon you suggested with a combo of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger for a gingerbread play dough!

I use essential oils in my play dough all the time. The kids really like that. I have also added glitter when making it too.

There is nothing like multiplying the senses - both smell and touch with scented dough ---love it.

If you're like me, and don't get the energy to make your own dough, I've been super pleased with Mama K's Gluten Free Aromatic Dough. You can also buy it on Amazon Prime.

The scents are with essential oils, and are pleasant but not overpowering, but different.

We can't use dough with wheat flour, and I'm just not crazy about "experimenting" when it gets so costly and messy and tiring.

But I'm bumping this thread because I saw it at the top of this forum and just had a conversation with some other moms about good play dough. I need to order some more STAT.

speaking of holiday scents and essential oils.. cedar or pine or balsaam fir or frankincense would all be "smells of the season" as we get closer to Christmas.

Vanilla is another yummy smell to use.

Lavender is a calming scent (smell the different EOs if you can there are differences)

and one I would never have guessed that I've used for making soap is equal parts of spearmint and eucalyptus.. such a fresh scent and eucalyptus is great for stuffy heads and such.. so it would be good for cold season
