DD is 3 and we've only read shorter books to her. At what age can a child listen to a chapter book, e.g. the Little House series?

I think it depends on the particular child and the situation. My younger two were that young when they started listening to chapter books read at bedtime. Once we got everyone tucked in, dh would sit in the hall and read aloud to the older two and the littles would fall asleep while listening. They didn't grasp it all but it would keep them still and quiet. As they got older and became more interested in following the story (sorry I can't remember a specific age), they'd ask questions. Listening to chapter books on tape in the car also worked for us at that age. I don't know if mine would have sat still enough to listen if we tried it on the couch with nothing else to do, though.

There's also the option of longer picture books, I'm not sure how long your short books are.

We've read some longer picture books to her, e.g. Mike Mulligan (and the other 3 by the same author whose name I've forgotten). She does fine with them so think she might be ready for something a little bit longer.
Is there something between a longer picture book and a child's chapter book (like Little House)? I think it would take a very long time to get through a book like Little House. Maybe something with 3 or 4 chapters?

We've read the entire Little House series to my son and daughter when my daughter was about 2.5 ... mainly as a way to help everyone unwind at night (and DH hadn't read them, so it was more bonding for us, as well).
