Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

...this is what he says he'd like to learn:

How to climb real ladders
How to open a gate
How to read books
How to saw with a real saw
How to use sharp nails
How to build a house and a very tall wall
How to drive a car
Play with Mommy
How to eat seaweed
How to jump up high on the couch
How to be upside-down

I've been fretting so much about educational philosophies, curriculum packages, learning styles, etc.- and I finally decided to just ask him what he thought.

It's a good reminder to me that he's only three and I should probably not sweat it so much. He wants to learn, but he also just wants to have fun and be a little boy.

I knew this already, of course, but it's so easy to get caught up in the excitement of planning...

That is so sweet, it's ridiculous. I love it! Wise little guy you've got there .

This is a philosophy to follow year after year after year. Something I seem to always forget too.

Ok...so I decided to try this little experiment on my 3 school-aged children.

Me: "What do you want to learn this year (in said grade)?"

kinder: "Nothing"
6th grader: "Nothing"
8th grader: "I don't know"

Me: "Oh, come on...try again"

kinder: "how to play ds's (the Nintendo DS her big sibs have)"
6th grader: "Nothing"
8th grader: "I don't know...maybe my algebra?!"

Me: "Ok...what do you want to learn before you are (next age)"

kinder: "how to share my toys and be gentle and teach our baby to stop screaming"
6th grader: "How to make pizza dough from scratch"
8th grader: "Canning vegetables from our garden"

Ok, last answers were a little better but this little experiment didn't pan out so well in creating a curriculum!    We don't have an unschooling philosophy around here and we talk a *LOT* about the value of an education and reading and writing and math etc. etc. so I'm a little perplexed by these answers. Maybe I haven't quite mastered teaching them how learning is a way of life and "school" is still too compartmentalized (read...too many workbooks?). I think I talk the talk but guess we haven't moved to walking the walk!

Kathryn, I'm in the same boat! I've strayed too far from organic learning and now I'm trying to undo that perspective before they get older.

Love the 3-year old list! That's awesome that he can articulate his wishes in such a way!
