Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am budget crazy. I live and die by the budget. I am ina budget crunch right now since the calendar yr for the homeschool budget ends 1 day before my only child's bday in august and hten a new year starts up.

Some thing has to go and I"m not sure which.
Maybe you other moms with more experience can advise me on the following:

I can either take him to the Philly orchestra for a family event to hear the carnival of animals (cost to us total is about $41.00 including parking and tolls, etc. and a children's theatre play about jack and the beanstalk cost to us as a family with tolls and parking about $34.00

or I can purchase the The Garden of the Good Shepherd: A Sticker Calendar to Count the Fifty Days of Easter
Peter Mazar, illustrations by Tomie dePaola
$15.00 and Forty Days and Forty Nights: A Lenten Ark Moving Toward Easter $15.00 and Bible Stories for the Forty Days
stories adapted by Melissa Musick Nussbaum, illustrations by Judy Jarrett
$15.00 plus s&h

I do have a lot of religion stuff. I don't have a daily activity for Easter though. I do have sticker fun/educational for him for advent and lent but not for Easter and so its kind of a dead time except for the decorations. I do have some booklets but some I'm saving for when he is older. I read to him the easter story from the library but you do it once and you are done. I use catholic cuisine website heavily for different feast days and did the good shepherd stuff. We had a good shepherd dinner with wolf paws and lamb cookies, and shepherd crook. it was fun! But they have a 6 week building upon itself good shepherd theme so I am drawn to it. I don't know.

If he acts up during the play or the orchestra I will be said that we went and know that we threw the money away. I sometimes think of the phrase, love your children twice as much and give them 1/2 as much and then I think of how much money I spend on homeschooling and extracurricular activities and wonder - am I spoiling him? Its so hard with yhou have only 1 and you can spend the money. As kids my husband and I never had as much in terms of toys and activities as he has.

Your advice please?
Thank you!

I think I would try one live event... whichever one is shorter if you don't know if he'll sit through it.   My dc love plays and live events, and it would be worth the cost to splurge on one for us.

I have used both the Lenten Ark and the Sticker calendar.... though I bought mine both on clearance after Easter one year for about $3 each. If you watch the clearance sales at places like The Catholic Company, you might be able to catch them on sale.

I would say, given the choice between the Lenten Ark or sticker calendar and going to hear the Carnival of the Animals, that it would be no contest which my kids would prefer. They would pick the orchestra in a heart beat.

I often find that when I want to purchase an item and am unsure about it or feel the cost is too much that it's best to wait. I'm always surprised by how often a deal will come along.
