Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A good friend of mine called and told me about friends of hers whose children go to school. The 1st grader is struggling with reading and because of this feels very badly about himself. The school teacher wants him to go to the Title I room. The mother would prefer he has some outside tutoring because a) leaving to go to Title I has a "stigma" that goes with it and her son is already struggling with his self esteem, and b)he would have to leave the classroom during other subjects and she doesn't want him to get behind in those.
I can understand her point of view! I told my friend I thought he was probably just immature but she asked me if I would consider tutoring.
I'm trying to figure this all out and I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has an opinion on this. From what she can tell, it seems as though phonics aren't stressed in the little boys classroom and maybe that's part of the problem, or maybe he truly has a learning disability. Anyway, any thoughts? What would you do?

I tutored children in exactly these situations - schooled all day and I had them extra. I do feel it is much better that they NOT miss those other subjects for the reasons you mentioned as well as 1) those might be the subjects they are good at and help to build their confidence as well as love for school 2) those might also be subjects that they are getting behind in and they can't afford to miss 3) it is a general disruption to the flow of the school day 4) it is much better for a child to get individual attention as he needs it, without still being dragged down by other children.

Really, if you could do something with him for short periods every day (15-20 minutes) or half an hour 2-3 times a week, in the beginning, he will likely fly ahead.

If YOU have the ability/time to help out and your husband is agreeable, I would recommend doing it. If it's not going to harm your family's schedule but will help someone else, that's where I'm stuck in the Christian duty mode ;)

My own personal particulars: I heavily relied on Montessori and Little Stories for Little Folks even with my 2nd/3rd grade students who had little to no reading level. My one 2nd grader went from NO reading skills at all to a 3rd grade reading level in 6 months (now, I also had her 4 days a week from after school unil midnight while her mom worked, and tutored her a solid 60 minutes each day, in addition to her getting her homework done and drilling her spelling words and such).

Thanks CatholicMommy.
Did you tutor the children in your home?

Yes, I started with having an in-home daycare, then I sort of fell into the tutoring portion for the children I took care of, which then morphed into offering that on the side as well for children I didn't also have in the daycare.
