Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Surprisingly, a search on this here has turned up nothing!

For many reasons, I want to pare down the toddler age books to the very best.

Say you could only have 10-20 books for that age, what are some that would make the cut? DS can sit for an "Are You My Mother?" length book, and really enjoys being read to. We also want to make sure he gets good BOY books after being influenced by 4 older sisters all day so suggestions along those lines are great too!

Thanks for humoring my crazy question - I know asking homeschoolers to pick their few favorite books is like asking a parent of many to pick their favorite child, LOL.

Just a blip about boys... I know the Tonka books are twaddle, but boys LOVE them. Probably good to get from the library. A bulldozer crazy 2 yo may well sit for most of one of these, or demand it to be read over and over. I wouldn't know about that, of course. Otherwise, every DK transportation-related board book ever published. Also...

Machines at Work, Byron Barton (and Byron Barton's other books)
Freight Train, Donald Crews

Other favorite books particularly for BOYS at this age:

Trashy Town - Andrea Zimmerman, David Clemesha, Dan Yaccarino

The Little Fireman - Margaret Wise Brown, Esphyr Slobodkina (OOP, but a real gem!)

Lois Lenski's seasonal (I Like Winter, Now It's Fall, etc.) books and "Small" series

There are some really good ideas in this post too.

My favorite board book for toddler age (after having read and owned hundreds) is Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown. Both the words and the pictures are everything a toddler book should be - wonderful!

Jan Brett's books come in board book form, and they are done well as I didn't even realize they were shortened until we got the real ones from the library in an anthology.

At that age, my boys REALLY love the board books that are photographs of real items with things like "I dress myself." I'm not sure what the publisher is, offhand.

Our first favorite read aloud for both my oldest has been The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear.

WHAT??????????

I didn't know that!!!!!

We love Jan Brett, and I'd love to add some board books of Jan Brett for my littlest!

I have one that we've loved almost to pieces that I have to recommend for this time of year - The Little Pumpkin Book comes in hardcover and board book. We absolutely cherish this little book and read it over and over.

Another favorite board book for us has always been Bunny in the Wild illustrated by Maggie Brand - so gentle and sweet - a lift the flap book. Unfortunately, oop. There are more in the series, Puppy in the Woods, Foal on the Farm, Kitten in the Garden. They have been illustrated in a very realistic, Beatrix Potter type way which I prefer. If you find one used, snatch it up!

And, we really enjoy the sweetness of the Gerda Muller board books! No words. Just lovely, detailed illustrations. My dd loves the Autumn book right now. She'll very sweetly point to and identify some of the pictures in the book.

The Slinky Malinky and Hairy McLary series
Byron Barton's My Car and Airplane
The Giant Jam Sandwich
Dear Zoo
Museum ABC

Jan Brett board books
Jamberry
The Mouse and the Cookie

Another vote for Trashy Town!

Brown Bear, Brown Bear is my 2 year old's very favorite, and any books about Daddies. What Dads Can't Do and the Mercer Mayer book about daddies are the two we have and read all the time.
