How do you go about using Montessori ideas for older children older than 9. I have seen Natural structure but didn't really see how it was any different from any other type of schooling. Anyone?

Lisa,

I'll warn you in advance that I have no experience, but I have an eight year old and was curious, too. A couple of things that started making the Montessori methodology make sense to me for the older child were the Michael Olaf catalog and also this Scope and Sequence. Like I said, these resources helped create a picture in my mind of how it might be possible, and what the goals and outcomes might be.

Lisa the book Montessori at Home: The School years by Elizabeth Hainstock is excellent. Its very inexpensive and demonstrates how to make and use the Montessori math and grammar materials for 6-12 yos. I am using different items than she describes to make the same math manips and will upload here.

Montessorimaterials.org has downloads of the grammar cards and symbols ready to print.

I am prepping to upload some of the new sites I have bookmarked this week.

Kim, thank you for resurrecting this site. I'd lost it. I just printed out many of the cards and am determined to laminate them and begin work with my 4 yr old.

Thanks for the site! I have not tried to introduce the Montessori grammar to my kids yet. I keep procrastinating. I suppose I don't have many exciting memories about my childhood grammar lessons - but the motessori way seems like a great constructive game! Now that I've seen the site it has given me the urge to do it. I have also seen that that Montessori materials companies produce the verb, noun, etc in the 3-D solid form. They look wonderful to touch and hold (I would have loved to have "held" a verb in my hands!) Has anyone got these and are they worth it. I really feel tempted to get them!

Just make them out of Sculpey....we did and keep them in a hardware type drawer system when we are using them and a plastic tackle box when we aren't...I have found that I learn so much more when I make the materials...not to mention that it cuts down on cost

That is just what I needed to "hear". I will make them myself and maybe even the kids will join in.

I agree about learning something from the act of making Montessori materials. I made dressing frames and sandpaper letters - and the kids are always proud of the idea that I actually made them

You get to understand on another level about the beauty and genious in the "simplicity" of the materials.

Okay - I will have a good go at getting a perfect sphere! Any tips??? Did you make all the 2-D shapes with sculpey as well or just cardboard/laminated paper?

I do hope the dds will join in - hopefully it will mean that the solids will be that much more special to use!

If you ck out montessoritraining.net you will also find some really nice ideas in the elementary language curric. samples from their manual. (I want it, I want it!; )) I am thinking of modifying the grammar train to a pocket chart type thing.

I have printed all the samples. Those alone have great supplements. Don't miss the video clips they have also. Wonderful free tutorials on how to present the materials.

I got my blog up and running finally and have been trying to upload our activities a bit every day. Very preliminary pics on there now but its a start and might be helpful to someone. Mine are definitely a mix of pure Montessori and modified - with more of the latter. Consider it Montessori on a Shoestring. Maybe half a shoestring lol!
