Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My little guy is a new reader - can read the Bob books and HOP readers. He keeps asking me for other books he can read by himself - and my tired brain is having trouble coming up with appropriate ones. I know there are several series for very new readers, which are phonically organized - but I cannot remember any of them. We do have the Dr. Seuss ones - and some of them like HOP on POP and Green eggs and Ham are ok - some are too hard.

Thanks for your help.

My new reader absolutely loves his Faith and Freedom Readers from Seton. There are three for the beginning level: Seton Readers

Blessings!

I REALLY like the series called Brand New Readers. So very cute, funny, etc. My dd likes them much more than the Bob books or any of the other readers we have.

My newest reader finds plenty of books at our library, where the early readers are coded with colored dots according to the # of words in each book.

Thank you all so much for the wonderful suggestions. Meredith the Seton readers look great - if I can find a Seton free shipping code I will order them or wait until the conference in June. Theresa - I LOVE the look of the Brand New Readers - I put a whole load on hold at the library. Happy Mama - thanks for the suggestion - we do use the library extensively - problem is with not feeling so well I have got in the habit of putting stacks of books on hold and then my dh picks them up. Maybe I will try and make it in this weekend and spend some time in the ER section

He has a little bit, but in the near future he will LOVE Clyde Bulla and wife's books:

The Beast of Lor
The Sword in the Tree Pocahontis
And any others written by them! My sons loved them. One son was moved to tears by pocahontis but he was a late reader and thus understood it very well.(she dies but it is poetically written)

Check them out!

Oh, also the Frog and Toad books are probably just a little step above the new readers, but very nice stories.

There are quite a few companies that make books for beginning readers (on up); they use numbers or other codes to indicate which books come first and use easier words.

They include Dorling Kindersley Readers, ‘I Can Read’ Books, Welcome Books, and Scholastic Time-to-Discover Books.

Hope that helps!

Sarah - thanks for the suggestions - we love Bulla - we have the all the books (in print) as my older guys loved them - but Matt is only just 5 and these are a little hard.

We also have Frog and Toad and Little Bear - but again for a very new reader they are quite long and complex

Thanks Lori for the suggestions - I will go check them out at the ER section of the library.

Mary Chris - thanks for the offer. Hope to see you at nature study at some point - belly allowing!

I just picked up a stack of the Brand New Readers from the libray - they are AWESOME. Matt sat and read 6 of them in a row! There are words he does not know - but with the repetition he learns them. Thank you for the recommendation Theresa - they are a huge hit here!

I don't know how this fits with your budget - perhaps you could borrow them from someone local??? But, my new readers always cut their teeth on the little readers included in the Little Stories for Little Folks from CHC. They're so simple and short, and though not my exclusive phonics program and set of readers, it is a very big part, especially at the beginning. Short readers phonetically progress with simple, sweet stories with a Catholic emphasis - we love "Ann at Mass".

Just wanted to mention these in case you hadn't thought of it.

You know Jen - I looked at them this weekend - because CHC has free shipping. I may ask you some more questions about them (on my way out to activities)

CHC has some new books out I wanted to ask if anyone has read. Will come back and ask some opinions later today.

I have found the Modern Curriculum Press readers at our library and used them for short vowels, etc. They are all bound together in a hardcover. Not a lot of words on one page and big colorful pictres. Our lib has lots of them.

I was going to recommend these, too. After the BOB books, these are what my 5yodd started reading. We love them! Instead of folding each little story, we cut the pages apart and arranged them in little "brag book" photo albums.

We'll be getting the Seton readers and my MIL is giving us her American Cardinal Readers (which are expensive!) Love2Learn has samples of those... Who uses Little Angel Readers? I see them on Jennifer's list here.

From the library, we like the "Little Bear" books and my daughter actually did quite well with the "Minerva Louise" books...and she is reading "A Treasury of Dick and Jane And Friends" right now.

Oh yes - and she also likes reading the stories at Starfall.com (and that is free!)

I use them and like them quite a bit. I use the Little Readers from CHC first and then sort of use both for a little transition time and then end up in the Little Angel Readers to finish out phonics instruction.

We are using them for the first time this year. My ds age-6 does not enjoy the list of review words included in the book but loves reading the stories. Short and sweet and just his style.

Blessings to all,
Jody

All About Spelling has a brand new reader that correlates with level 1. It looks gorgeous. It is hardback, Smythe-sewn, and well illustrated. It is not Catholic, tho.' It is on sale through the end of the month.

Have you checked out Rookie Readers at the library? I have seen only a couple of these, but I often use Rookie Read About books in our studies and plan to use Rookie biographies (the lower case b is deliberate) next year. The best thing about these is that you can often find Rookie books at the library. The worst thing is some of the biographies cover people I consider marginal at best -- Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Seuss, etc.

In Christ,
Deborah
