Ladies!
My ds is a major geography buff. We have this map
http://www.1worldglobes.com/GeoSafari/geosafari-wonder-world .htm (sorry don't know how to link) and ds LOVE LOVE LOVES using it.
We don't have any puzzle maps yet, although i am definitely considering it.
So far we just pick up the label and find the location. We choose an animal and stick it where we think that animal might go. I also use the map when we come across a location in our Sonlight geography and history curriculum (i am now supplementing with montessori.)
I am going to make more labels using card stock, my xyron and some velcro tabs. I am just wondering if you fountains of homeschooling creativity can suggest some ways to mix up this activity or add to it with similar activities - ds asks to do geography every day!

We have USA, World and Continent puzzles - wooden and the huge floor maps. My kids are all geo buffs - and we have a lot of geography board games - Scrambled States of America, National Geographic ones etc. Usborne has a couple of Sticker encyclopedias - flags and animals of the world I believe - my kids love these. My kids love the Geography Songs - Countries of the World cd - amazing how they know all the countries and capitals after listening to this. There are a couple of websites which are very good - cannot remember them - my kids from 3 to 11 have enjoyed them - I will see if I can find them. How about reading picture books from around the world and coloring in a big world map for each country you cover. Check out www.geomatters.com which has some cute resources for when he is older - eg Eating your Way Round the World
Another idea just came to me - collect postcards from different states and around the world - you could even ask people on this list to send you postcards from where they are?

I would suggest following the Montessori geography curriculum - you can do it without the puzzle maps, as long as you have some kind of maps, and much of the stuff you can make at home (land & water forms with clay and water, for instance).
There's a systematic way to study geography, starting with basic land and water forms, then advanced land and water forms, then biomes, then animals, plants, and places of each country/continent. The Comprehensive List 6-9 has a page of Geography, with all possible activities listed.

I made continent boxes for my guys over the summer and we are studying a new continent each month. So, far it is going great. They work independently for a good part of it and are learning lots on all levels. Here's what we do:
week 1 - intro which includes going thru our box, watching a video from the library, and them researching questions that are used for every continent (oceans that border , mountain ranges, where you'd visit).
Week 2 - do various map activities with that continent (many are from enchanted learning. I just glue them to construction paper and put answers on back).
Week 3 - explore culture by researching questions about religion, typical child's day, work, homes, etc..
Week 4 - They are each given a topic to research and report on. For example, "compare/contrast 2 native american homes" for 7 yr old. "What are cocoa beans used for, where are they grown, and explain how they are harvested and processed"for the 9 yr old. "When was the panama canal built, by whom, and why? Discuss hardships encountered during construction" for 11 yr old.
On Fridays we also play one of our geography games, either "Great States" or "Name that country". I love them both because you can adjust them for dif ages.
They also enjoy working on the Top Secret packets from HiLights. A couple years ago I bought these and they weren't excited about them. I put them away and now they even do them at bedtime and on weekends.
They also have puzzles, pin maps, a globe that quizes, and numerous books available to them.

I don't think this game Map Tangle was mentioned in the other thread. This is fun for the younger set, it's Twister on a map.
