Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

How much work do you have out for each of your kids? (After you get going, if you start with relatively bare shelves at the beginning of the year).

One of the mistakes I have been making is not having enough work for all 3 of my littles : age 5, 2, and 2. I'll also put out a few things for my 1 yo, but I feel a little more confident about that. The real problem is gauging how much work for the twins, who tend to want to do what the other is doing.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how to best use my space, how much shelving to provide, etc. (We're taking a few weeks off after "summer school".) But first I think I have to know how many works I ought to have available at any given time.

Well, I've been thinking I have too much out! A lot of things just sit unused, but maybe I just need to rotate more? I have 3 different bookshelves (each with 4-6 shelves) filled with materials. I have 4 kids, but really the 4-year-old does most of the montessori work.

There's no hard and fast answer - I guess "enough to keep them busy" is the best one :) It can depend on how long your work time is, how many works can be done by different age groups, etc. I would think with the age ranges you have, you'd have at least a few bookshelves of stuff out.

I do remember seeing a quote around here from a mom who said to keep it "few and new". I think it's better to have too little and add more than have too much stuff out right away. Rotate often.

Ditto what Lori said.

I repeatedly find that putting a material away for a while and then bringing it back out with a presentation is a sure way to arouse interest.
