So I understand how the pbg reading works. I see it as a great way to give the lessons and a great way for the child to independently work with the lesson. I don't see how they child works with the p/b/g material beyond the initial application.
Do your dc use the pink when they are on the blue? How many 'boxes' of cards are typically used at one time? When do your dc use readers? Do they initiate p/b/g card work on their own? Just tell me how this plays out for you in reality?
I'm totally overwhelmed by the idea of putting together my own p/b/g materials and i am thinking about buying them from montessori r&d. I just need to know that they are really used beyond the immediate few applications of the presentation...

I will try to answer all your questions!
1. Do they use the pink when on the blue? No, typically the child works through all the pink series first before moving on to the blue. Once they move on to blue, they do not revisit the pink materials.
How do you know when they are ready to move on to the next series? When they can complete the current series without much help, and without making errors.
2. They should be using readers (anything from Bob books to other leveled readers) at the same time they are using the pink, blue, and green series. Just match up the words in the readers to the series they're on. For instance, Bob books mostly use 3-letter, short vowel words so they would be used while working on pink series.
3. Does the child initiate the work? You will give the first, initial presentation of the materials. After that, it is like any work: the child can choose it during the course of a work period, or you can suggest it. How often should they do it? As often as needed to master it. Some kids will master pink series rhyming the first time they do it. Others will need to repeat it several times.
I generally find that pink series materials are done the first half of grade 1, blue series the second, and green series the first half of grade 2. After that the child has mastered most basic sounds/letter combinations and it's just a matter of refining their knowledge.
The pink, blue, and green work does get an enormous amount of use during the first year and a half, so it's well worth either making it yourself or buying it.

BTW - Just to put in a plug for Lori, I bought my pink series printed from Lori. It came SO fast. I brought it to Staples to have it laminated. It looks great!
I have BOB books to go with it.

Mumsrea, just curious - in an earlier post you had said that customer service wasn't very good at Montessori R & D and you decided against ordering their manuals. So I wondered why you wanted to get the pink, blue, and green stuff from them.

The pink series is something we used daily. Enormously useful and can be used in so many ways-word cards with picture matching, object matching, spelling with the moveable alphabet, command cards (my dd's favorite)etc, etc. Blue series dd worked through VERY quickly, and now I need to purchase the green. Just waiting on budget, kwim? I highly recommend either buying or making it yourself, but either way I'd consider them essential, as it is sooooo useful.

I'm using the Lori's series and I love it...so does my son. My 3yo actually is watching his older brother and wants to do it too!
I never read your earlier thread but about R&D but I can tell you first hand you'll get GREAT customer service from Lori, not to mention EXCELLENT quality products! I've ordered products from R&D and I'm happy with them but to be honest I think they are a bit overpriced.

You guys are so sweet! Thank you.
Mumsrea, I only sell the pink, blue, and green as either PDFs or printed. My printed materials are not laminated. If you're looking for laminated materials (although I don't think they're cut out) for a reasonable price, I created these materials for Alison's Montessori last year, and they do sell a laminated version:
Pink Series
See their "Printable Materials" category for the Blue & Green Series as well.

Thanks lori. I've got me my trusty xyron 900, lol.
Funny you made the materials for Alison's! I was just comparing the two. Is it just me or does that set include things which are different from your offerings? (Phrases, sight words, secret words?) I'm wondering if a combination of the two might not be the best for me.

There are some differences between the two sets - but you wouldn't necessarily need both. Although I have both, since I made them, and I do use things from both sets.
They have word list cards, which I don't, but I have the spelling cards, which are always very popular.
Otherwise, our materials cover similar areas/concepts.
If you're going to buy the printed from me, I could send you the pink series right now and the blue & green in two weeks - I'm revising the blue & green to use photos instead of clipart and they'll be ready the beginning of September.
I made my pink, blue, & green about 10 years ago when clipart was still popular :)

I would like to get the pink materials for my ds5 and wondered which of the materials I should order- I don't want to get the complete pink/blue/green set as I want to see how he takes to it first, so which of the pink materials should I buy? All of them? I guess they all work together...
Also, I was looking at the green cards for my strong reader ds8 who hasn't done any spelling outside of copywork- the spelling cards looked like they might be a good fit. Any opinions??

It is nice to get all of them together, but if I had to choose two, I'd probably choose the pink series pictures & words cards, and the pink series pictures to do spelling with the movable alphabet.
The spelling cards are excellent! I can say that because I've used them in class and with my son. Do one spelling card a week, and they really "get" the different letter combinations.
