Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a chalk board easel that I recovered from a neighbor's trash. It is in really good condition and the chalkboard side is great. The other side, however, is not really usable at this point. I *think* at one time it was a white board but it has been colored on with crayon, perm. marker etc.

I was thinking I could perhaps make that side into a felt board. DS has these really neat felt board farm animals that my mom got him for Christmas last year but we have had nothing to stick them to.

So, my question is.. is it really just a matter of buying a big piece of felt and stapling it to the board? Do I need to put any kind of backing behind it? Also, is it better to use felt or flannel?

Thanks so much in advance,
Ryane

I made one a few years ago from an old frame and a piece of Masonite board cut to size. I just duct taped it around the edges and fitted it together.

I used fleece for the fabric. I experimented with flannel and felt, but I thought that the fleece stuck better to the felt pieces that we have.

I might recommend taking your pieces to Joann's and just "testing" out some fabric or finding some that goes well with your room.

As for backing I didn't use any but the fleece is a bit thicker than flannel. You wouldn't need any, but you might want to put a piece of batting behind fleece just to give it a nice look...I think it would be totally optional, though.

Ooooh! That sounds like a really fun project, Ryane. I wouldn't think you'd need backing, and you might find a good glue (I'm thinking liquid nails - but I usually go for overkill in gluing projects ) would work just as well to hold your felt in place.

I like felt, but Betsy had a really good idea by just bringing the pieces to Joann's and testing!

Have fun!

I also made a felt board for the weather a few weeks back. I just used spray adhesive with regular felt on some left over plywood. You might also look at getting stiffened felt for the pieces. I find it much easier to cut out then regular felt. If you sift through this blog post I have a picture of the weather board.
