I made mine by printing it, laminating, and then cutting the letters apart. I used a plastic tackle box for storage.

I also printed mine with the capital letters on the back, so if a child is writing a story, they can flip the letter over when they need to.

Just a note - the one that Jen links to - the wooden letters cut out - is more for 3-6 work (matching the beginning sound to objects and pictures, building small words).

This kind is for either 3-6 or 6-9 - can be used for sounds work, word building, story writing, and other things too.

The other nice thing about the printed movable alphabet is that you can have a lot of each letter - I must have 20 of each in mine. That way kids can write long stories or sentences.

I notice that Alison's is backordered, but I'm sure that other places (Montessori n' Such) have it too, if you didn't want to make one yourself.

I made a set of laminated paper letters too, and we use both those and the wooden ones. It's nice to have a lot of letters in the paper set, but my dd much prefers to work with the wooden ones. The laminated paper ones are just too fiddly for her, I think.

How old is she? In my experience, elementary kids handle the printed ones really well. But it could vary by child.

I got mine from Montessori Concepts. The only odd thing (to me, anyway) with our set is that the letter "p" has the same little tail at the end as the "q". It bugs me because it just doesn't look like a "p". I'm assuming it's so that the children don't confuse it with a "d" when they put it away, but I'd rather that than a funky-looking letter "p". It's not visible in the photo on their web site, but it doesn't seem as though other suppliers have this problem.

Good point. She is six, so right on the border. Perhaps she will like it better as she get older.

Late to this game... but I used a craft bead storage box and wooden scrabble pieces that I bought at Michael's/AC Moore to make my own moveable alphabet. I put lowercase letters on the back of the scrabble pieces. FYI for anyone who wants to make their own for under $10 -- I posted pictures here
