Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK, so what do I do when my 3 1/2 yo is using the cylinder blocks as choo trains the and cylinders as people. The please the materials for their intended purpose only isn't working. Of course, the older 3 joined in and then I had a choo, a car, a bus, and one plane....Do you ignore it or do you stop it?

Thanks,

Well, that's up to you. :)

But in a Montessori school, that "type" of activity would very quickly be stopped, and the child re-directed to a different type of activity. The cylinders would be re-presented at a later date.

Btw, can your child do them correctly yet? Has he been introduced to them one at a time? And if he can do them individually, have you shown him how to combine sets yet?

If he's "misusing" something, it's probably a sign that he's not ready yet, or way past them. Or insatiably curious about trains. :) Does he have other "train toys" somewhere else in the house to play with? In our house, we strictly forbid "toys for playing" from the classroom.

Good luck!

Holly,
When my kids start mis-using materials I remove them from the room. I have a closet under our stairs and I rotate materials off the shelves in the learning room and into the closet - out of the closet and onto the shelves. It keeps materials fresh. I know this isn't strict Montessori. In Montessori schools materials are left out all year after they are presented, but I'm not trying to duplicate a school in the home so we adapt to the reality that most materials at some point will end up being a bomb/torpedo/sword/train if my children become bored.

I do emphasize like you that these materials are for our work, not for play.

HTH.
