I have a couple of questions from the Montessori in the classroom book I'm hoping someone can answer:
First:Does anyone know where I can purchase the blue-lined marker paper and story paper. I've seen where you can print up your own, but I'd rather just buy it if possible.
Second:What is the difference between phonetic objects and phonogram objects?
Third: Has anyone done the collage trays with science materials like the planets, inner earth, etc? If so, how did you set them up? Did you do a control? I'm going to attempt some stuff like this, but was wondering if anyone had some tips for me.

Theresa,
Can't help you with the blue lined marker paper and story paper. You've probably already checked Montessori Services and Montessori N Such. I read Montessori in the Classroom over the summer, but I confess I don't remember when she used the story paper. Leaking brain cells!
To my knowledge, there is no difference between the phonetic objects or the phonogram objects. Both are used to help identify the various phonemes in learning to read.
I have just done a collage tray for our nature center. I just set it up in fact. We are studying Botany right now. Here's my blog post on our nature center You can see the collage tray on the second shelf down on the left. I filled it with a variety of seeds, plants, flowers, etc from the world of Botany. I do not have a control, but instead have the children spend Fridays identifying something new on the collage tray. Because nature walks are next to nill right now (with my growing belly and the colder weather) I use the collage tray to fill in. They will illustrate and write a small bit about the item found on the collage tray in their nature notebooks. This is the first collage tray I put together, but I really enjoyed doing it. It's like a nature mystery bag. And the kids gravitated to it immediately.
HTH! Good luck finding the story paper.

For story paper, do you mean something like this:
Teacher Store House - Story Paper. I Googled "story paper carson" because I assumed Carson Dellosa probably makes story paper.
Phonetic objects are objects that can be spelled phonetically. ("cat", "pot"). Phonogram objects are objects that can't be spelled phonetically, but use phonograms (combinations of letters that create new sounds when put together). Examples: "train", which uses the "ai" phonogram, or "cake", which uses the "a_e" phonogram.
Phonetic objects would be any pink or blue series words, and phonogram objects would be for green series words. Those are the designations that I use rather than "phonetic" or "phonogram" objects. I just say "pink series objects", "blue series objects" and "green series objects", since each category is a little different.

Thanks, Lori. I had a feeling thats what those terms meant, but wasn't sure. I knew you could clear me up!
I found the paper I was looking for here:Montessori paper
As described in the book, the marker paper would be the blue lined paper pictured third from the left, and the story paper would be the fifth.

Me either. What are your plans for it Theresa? I'm curious. Also, are you putting together a collage tray for astronomy studies? I'd love to see what you get together when you're done. Could you link us if you put something together?
Thank you as well Lori for the clarification on the phonogram and phonetic object differences. I'm right between readers here, so I should have known there would be a difference, but obviously hadn't looked into it very closely.

When I was reading the book, I was inspired by all of the writing the children did. For the marker paper, the children would draw a picture, and then write a single word below. If they did not know how to spell the word, she would write it on a separate paper and they could copy it onto the marker paper. When they had done several of these, she would staple them into a little book.
The story paper was where they would draw a picture and then tell the teacher a story about it. She would then write their story down an they would copy it onto the paper, making their own illustrated stories.
The story paper method sound a lot like the CM-ish approach of having children re-copy and illustrate their oral narrations.
I do think I am going to make a collage tray for astronomy. I will certainly link it when I get it together.
