Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know of any prepared resources for teaching multisyllabic words (reading).

I have some compound word cards that I can use.

I was also thinking something along the lines of:

- getting a piture (eg submarine) representing a two or three syllable word. Cutting the picture into the number of syllables it has and having one syllable on each part of the card.
- an extension later will be to have the number of sounds in each syllable for him to spell - but that can wait.

I would like to get something I can download and start to use now.

Hi Louise

You might like to try: http://www.carlscorner.us/

Whilst this site is not "Montessori", it's got lots of language ideas and activities. There is a whole section on compound words.

Hope it's of help.

Louise, there is a Montessori material called "Syllabication". I think this is what you might be looking for. Anyway, it consists of five title cards ("1 Syllable", "2 Syllables", etc.) and then assorted cards with words of different syllables.

The child reads the word and then softly claps out the word to figure out how many syllables are in it. Then they put the word under the correct title card. I've been meaning to make it and I just haven't gotten around to it.

You didn't mention the age of your son, but if he is preschool age I would keep this work oral at this point - you two sit facing each other and you call out a word and you both clap to figure out how many syllables are in it.

If he is elementary age, you could make some word cards to use as I described above. For this age, I wouldn't use pictures since the focus should be on the word itself. And if you cut the words apart into syllables, I think it gets a little too complicated and tricky so I would keep them whole. That's just me, though!

Edited to add: here's a page with worksheets & stuff for syllables work: Syllabication

Great work ladies, this looks perfect!! We've had fun incorporating this type of work into our poetry studies as well and learning about Haiku in a similar fashion

Thanks ladies, I'm going to add this syllabication to my "grammar drawers" project!

I should have added - the skill of learning to divide words correctly for hyphenating is separate from syllabication. I think there are specific rules for how to divide them, and those can probably be found in a grammar book or website.

The Syllabication work is just to learn about determining number of syllables.

Thanks so much for the links and ideas. I'll get busy!! DS is in grade one and I need to help him to tackle reading words of more than one syllable.
