Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I printed out a test sheet (scroll down) for making single letter books. But I'm not sure I understand how the letters are meant to be centered on the paper. Does anyone know, or know of a link that explains it? My ds will do just about anything if we can turn it into a book.

Melinda, thanks for bringing this up, I need to make some of these for my ds 5 as well! Judging by the photo at the above link, it looks to me like she cut each black-outlined square out for each letter and then stapled it into the book. This would make the letter booklet's only about 3" x 3" square. I might play around with it a bit and enlarge it personally as the child might become frustrated if they had to make their letters in such a small piece, but maybe not. I DO remember reading about this in Montessori in the Classroom but I had to return my library copy so I can't recall exactly what the sizes of the books her children made, sorry

I will research a bit more on this, as I do think this is something you want to get *right* from the beginning

Anyone else???

It is about a 3x3 square: two white lines, a blue line, then two more white lines. I can't for the life of me figure out which lines we're supposed to use- the two top ones? two bottom ones? Writing over the blue space doesn't make any sense. My research hasn't turned up much, and my copy of the book was ILL- thought I don't recall if she gave more detail in that or not.

Ok, here is my understanding of it. You do write in the blue space, and the white spaces directly above and below are for ascenders and descenders (I don't know the technical name, just what I have always called the parts that go up above the midline or down below the base line). Then that leaves a blank white space at the top and bottom which would be your margins.
At least that is how I interpret it.

Thanks, Theresa. That triggered my memory about the ascenders and descenders as described in the book. That must be it. However, writing in the blue space seems distracting to me somehow. I guess I can just try it and see if the kids like it. The blue space does seem to focus the main area for the body of the letter nicely.
