1. Cylinders
I have a mass set that is not hooked. It would correspond with the third cylinder set which involves decreasing in both the diamter and the length. I am missing the smallest piece. Also, they are stored in a box with a hinged lid and take up two rows instead of one long continuous row.
2. Geometric solids
I have a wooden set minus the ellipsoid, ovoid, and sphere. Also, some of the pieces have been used for tracing and have marker around the perimeter of the base.
Would these be sufficient to accomplish their intended goals? Also, does anyone suggest purchasing all four cylinder sets or is one "good enough"? TIA.

This sounds like it would be a worthwhile activity, even if it doesn't quite match the standard version. If there's a space in the box for the missing piece, you'd probably want to tape over it, or fill it in, or something like that.

Since one of the goals of the geometric solids is to introduce the children to the various forms and their names, it would be very helpful to find something that's a reasonably good match for the missing pieces, in terms of size, color, and materials. Craft stores usually have unfinished wooden spheres and eggs for $1 or so (though it's important to check and make sure the egg is really egg-shaped, rather than the type with the flattened base).
I'm not sure where you'd find an ellipsoid (and, personally, I don't think it's a big deal if you're missing it). If you're prepared to go to some extra trouble, though, you could get an extra egg and try sanding it to the right shape.
As for the marker, if you think it's significant enough to cause distraction, maybe you could paint the whole set, or stain it in a dark color?

If your budget allows, I think it would be worthwhile to have all four. The cylinder blocks are typically one of the first sensorial presentations, and they're very appealing to the children. It's especially fun for them to work through the different levels of difficulty, and to mix up multiple sets.
None of the materials are truly "irreplaceable," though; there are always alternative ways to teach the same concepts.

Eleanor...thank you so much for your thorough input. You know, I was going to try and get started on Montessori presentations Monday but I might try and take another week or so in order to feel a little more prepared. And your remark about the kids really responding well to the cylinders has me thinking that a few things might just be worth the upfront investment..considering we have a few more coming up in the ranks. However, those kinds of decisions require a joint meeting of the financial department heads in my house.

Unless price is a constraint, I would get the whole set. I actually haven't seen them sold separately, but maybe they do. You definately want the progression with the Cylinders!
