I ordered some from Montessori Services, and it came today. Looking at it, it looks like a very short stack for $6 (I think it's 300 sheets). Has anyone tried going to a printer and asking for paper to be cut down? And what kind of printer would you go to? (how's that for poor grammar? ). I know MO has paper for much less, but with shipping costs, I can't justify a stand alone paper order.

I know my dc will go through that little stack pretty quickly when we start using the insets.

I don't know the measurements offhand, but I would think it would be very easy to get this paper from a printing shop. I would think any print shop would do. There should be listings for print shops in the yellow pages, and you could call to see if they'd do this for you. I thought I might do the same thing.

I just called Kinko's.

$1.50 / cut / 200 pieces.
It's a square, so 4 cuts.
$6 for 200 sheets.

I think Montessori Services is $6 for 600 sheets?

For plain white at MS, it's $6 for 500 sheets and $6.50 for 500 colored sheets. That's still quite a bit cheaper than Kinko's, though. Thanks for that info, Suzanne.   Hmm, I might have to get good at cutting squares.

I just called a printer that we know via some other friends. I asked her about cutting 5.5 inch squares for us. She laughed and said OF COURSE. It's the printing that's hard....cutting is easy. So, she's doing 2000 pieces for us and said to call if we ever needed more. no charge.

If anyone has a printer that you "sorta know"...it's worth a try.

Our former neighbor worked for a printer and would occasionally give us cast-off paper...either printing or cutting jobs done incorrectly or spare edges. Once he gave us a whole box of 5.5 x 12" of 'spare edges", which I then cut down myself into 5.5" squares (2 squares per sheet, with 2" leftover). It was really nice heavy quality paper...not quite cardstock, but almost. Perfect for my little ones.

So, I echo Suzanne...if you "sorta know" a printer, it's worth a shot. And, hmmm...you might think of going to some independent printers (not the big office places like Kinko's) and asking if they give away cast offs and such.

If you're cutting a lot of straight lines (inset paper, 3-part cards, phonics material, etc.), a full-size paper trimmer might be a good investment. I've had one for years, and use it for all kinds of things. Mine is the OfficeMax store brand; the list price is $30, but I seem to recall that they go on sale from time to time.

This type of trimmer will cut at least 15 sheets of 8.5" x 11" paper at a time. This would give you 30 sheets of inset paper with just two cuts: one to cut a 3" strip off one side, another to cut the remaining sheet in half. With about $6 worth of copy paper, and a bit of tedium, you could make 1500 sheets of white inset paper, or 1000 sheets of colored.

If you're feeling ambitious, before you cut the paper, you can print a pattern of lines (horizontal, diagonal, wavy, or zig-zag) on the 3" strip that you're going to remove. Then you can cut that strip into smaller pieces, which the children can use to practice cutting with scissors. No waste, and two activities in one!

I think the reality is a child can easily use up a tree with drawing/writing and cutting...
