We did the table top number rods. Ds really liked those- no problems with "playing" with the materials. Dd had no interest in them.
We also did whole hand transfer with large shells and the baster and colored water activity- both well received. We did a color mixing activity, also. Ds was thrilled, dd was only interested for a few minutes.
This afternoon I caught ds looking through my big practical life binder - said he was "looking through the experiment book for more experiments to do"

I got my some more cooking untinsils at Target yesterday. I got this finger veggie peeler and a small cheese garder. They had a great time peeling carrots and shaving cheese with the veggie peeler. I am really glad I did this class. I never would have done these other items nor had other ideas to do. I thought the Practical life album wouldn't give me much b/c I do a lot with my kids already, but it has!
Right now, I'm working on the "craft" room which is my master closet being turned into a small room for them. I figured it was big enough and they can clean up right there in the bathroom. I am thinking I will add in other "experiments" to do in there for them.

I am busy replacing the materials I made a few years ago. On one of the Montessori lists...Montessori makers, I think, they had the idea of using the flexible colored cutting mats from target for the Constructive triangles! I want so bad to present these to my little ones. I was thinking about hauling the masses out there to see what I could see. I used cardboard before and they held up well, but weren't as pretty (I rubbber cemented colored printouts on the tops of them and sealed with a bit of packing tape)
My 2.5 yo loves the geometric solids I have for her in a nice little basket. I keep adding a new one in there every so often and she loves finding it! (this makes my mommy-heart happy )
I also have been watching the dc outside...sometimes they naturally do a pouring or transferring activity on their own and I just keep the other ones from distracting them from their work or taking it over (or running it over) It is amazing what presentations I have learned just by looking with my new "glasses" I am trying to record my observations and plan new ones from there.
Note to self: I have to get a red notebook...so I have less chance of losing it

We did tray carrying (see my blog) and corn shucking. I was standing at the trash can cleaning the corn, and all of the sudden I had kids all around me trying it out. I got one really funny picture and I plan on blogging about it later.

My dd loves, loves, LOVES corn shucking! She says it is her job.
We were shucking some together just the other day and she kept asking me "what is this called?" for the silk, the husk, the kernels, the stalk, etc. I was thinking "I need to make some parts-of-the-corn three part cards!" I think Maria Montessori has taken over my brain!

Too cute! I had the thought of taking pictures in the cornfield (and rice and soybeans) too. I thought since we live in a heavily farmed area, I should teach about those crops. I think it is a "Montessori on the brain" kind of thing!

I presented 4 shapes from the geometric solids (cube, sphere, cone and cylinder), and was thrilled with how well it went. I also had these nifty little booklets from Montessori Services http://www.montessoriservices.com/store/index.php?main_page= index&cPath=91_248_2285
that we used along with them. Then, since the girls were into it, we had a look through http://www.amazon.com/Cubes-Cones-Cylinders-Spheres-Hoban/dp /0688153267/ref=sr_1_1/103-0509951-1111855?ie=UTF8&s=books&q id=1185574487&sr=8-1
to discuss more real life examples.
It was great!

I don't think I've mastered the linking thing. I'm such a Luddite.
Anyhoo, the sphere in the geometric solids also got my 7yo launched on an explanation of earth, its formation, its rotation, etc. I was impressed that she'd taken in so much from the things we've been reading lately!

I agree. I always wonder when we drive past farming areas, exactly what is in those fields. I'd LOVE to have a "field guide"
Oh, I crack myself up

OK, in the First Text Box that appears when you click on the link button you type in your text, eg. "Geometric Solids", then click OK and another box will pop up with the http:// link highlighted, that's where you paste your address. Make sense. Ahem, WHAT is a Luddite???
Fun day, sounds great!

Quick grab off the internet:
Luddite [n. LUH-dite] The noun Luddite specifically refers to one of a group of early 19th century English workmen who were campaigning against the automation of the power loom. Under cover of night and generally masked, the workers often destroyed the equipment that had displaced them. Today the word broadly refers to anyone who is opposed to technological change or new working methods. The name Luddite is presumed to come from the leader of these angry workmen: Ned Ludd. The Leicestershire worker is said to have rushed into a stocking weaver's house and destroyed his equipment.
In my case, the description would probably fit best when I walk into a coffee shop and see everyone wired for sound...nobody just chatting over a cup of tea with a friend...or on the train talking into their earpieces looking like crazy people until you see it...in general, feeling like the world has gone a little bit crazy and lost a bit of its heart in the name of progress. And don't even get me started on young people's spelling in an age of text-messaging
But I will, I will, I will master linking. 'Cuz I think you're all special

I forgot, we also did a lot of painting; specifically a project we call "butterflies". You fold an oversize piece of fingerpaint paper in half, open it, squirt a few blobs of different colors of tempera paint onto one side, fold the paper again and squish and mush all the colors around for about 10 seconds. When you open the paper, you have a symmetrical design, similar to a butterfly. Experimenting with the designs can make the paintings look more or less like a butterfly, but we still call it that.
My kids and the neighbor kids did a total of 49 butterfly paintings, which are all now signed in the bottom corners, taped to the wall in the basement, and displayed as an art gallery exhibit. The neighbor parents are all invited to the exhibit, but I've talked them out of charging admission.
I actually have no idea if this qualifies as a "presentation", considering that I just set out the supplies, remind them of the rules (no paint on the floor, please!) and let them go, but it's one of the things we've done this week! They love it.

Yes, that is a great art project. My ds loves to make "butterflies". I love the art gallery idea, too!

Shelling peas and snapping beans are also good activities. I plan on doing a presentation on Grating an Enormous Zucchini (so I can make zucchini bread and probably chocolate zucchini cake) later on today.
I also presented a scissors tray to my 4 yo... that went pretty well, but he's left handed and for some reason I cannot figure out how to show him the scissors. He's very patient with me, though.
Golf tees in clay have been popular this week. And my 8 yo has been cutting all our block cheese for the past week. She arranged it on a plate and served it at lunch the other day. I also did the first two presentations from Montessori R&D Fractions Manual for her, since she told me she wanted to learn about fractions. I don't have the elementary fraction material, so I used fraction circles from Cuisenaire. The presentation went well, but the circles are frustrating. They're too hard take out of the plastic container in the order in which they ought to be (whole first, then halves, then thirds, etc.) Plus there aren't any sevenths or ninths, which means the presentations have to be tweaked a little.
I had some other practical life trays planned for my 4 yo, but for some reason this week just slid down the tubes. My new weekly to do list is helping me out, though. Now to figure out how to make time for individual presentations for *everybody*.
