Ok. I have another concern about my bead material. When I line up the bead stair with the ten bar so that they are even on one end, the ten bar is about a half a bead shorter than the nine bar. In other words, the ten bar beads are not matching up with the nine bar beads (or any of the other beads for that matter). They appear to be slightly smaller than the other beads, but it is hard to tell. I was hoping to use the bead stair for addition (1+9=10, 2+8=10 etc.) and it looks like this won't work with these beads. I've spoken to the man at Alison's and he is looking into it for me.
Could you take a closer look at the beads that you purchased and tell me if yours appear to be the same? Mine are actually the 8mm beads offered by Alison's so they may not be the same ones you have but I'm just trying to find out if this is acceptable or is something that needs to be resolved. Thanks!
Kristin

Sorry I missed this one yesterday Kristin
All of my Golden Beads and Colored Beads are from Montessori Concepts and they are all graded accordingly, with the ten gold beads the longest and then on down. I'll be interested to know how he handles this one, sounds like a mix up to me. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help

I have the same set of beads from Alison's, and the 10 beads are slightly smaller than all the other beads. I think that's because it's a different bead, since they're clear gold rather than solid colored.
For making a bead stair, where you stack the beads against each other, I agree these beads wouldn't be a good choice. Also for the snake game these wouldn't work because you need to line the beads up next to each other.
For most other math activities (addition, multiplication layouts, square of pythagorus), I don't see why they wouldn't work. The child who's doing those things with the beads already knows how many beads go with each color (or they should) and won't be stacking them up against each other, just counting them.
Just me!
P.S. My son used this set for the things I mentioned above with no problems this past year - I have a bead stair set of just one set of beads for those kinds of activities, and a specific set for the snake game, so we didn't use the bead box for that.

Thanks for your responses here, Meredith and Lori. I actually am still in the process of sorting this all out with Alison's. After speaking with them, they realized for the first time (in two years) that the beads do not match up, golden to all the others. First solution offered was to send me a set of bead stairs --- from another company --- that I could use for the basic activities. I might have accepted this but then I got to thinking that I didn't want to invest the money and not have it be the way it should be. And so I spent the next week looking into other options. I figured I would be returning my bead material.
Then I got a call on Sunday from Alison's and they told me that they have switched manufacturer's for the 8mm golden beads and will be getting all new based on what I discovered! He hopes to have them in (for me) by the end of August and I should be getting samples in the mail on Wednesday (shipped Priority Mail) to make sure I'm happy with what I'll be getting.
All in all, Alison's really does have truly great customer service! However, I do hope they will be able to get the beads to me by the end of August as this is already an inconvenience and could really hold up the beginning of our school year here!

That's great Kristin, I'm so glad you are getting somewhere here. I knew Alison's would remedy this ASAP!! Praying they come sooner than later and that you are happy with the new samples coming!
Blessings!

I received the samples today and from what I can tell, the "new" beads are exactly the same as the old ones! This is a real bummer. After contemplating all of our options, dh and I have decided that we would rather spend our money with this company and work out a solution than go elsewhere. Tomorrow I will be calling them to see what we can come up with!

I hope you can work it out, Kristin. Sometimes it feels like nothing is ever easy. I will be making a bead purchase soon, and I have to say that I am not looking forward to it, since so many people have had problems. But if any company will work with you, Alison's is the one!
