So, today ds just starts reading words. First it was "pet" off the dog carrier. Then it was mat. Then he started asking me to write down words and hide them so he could find them and read them. Now he's going around the house looking for three letter words to sound out and read. He's very excited. I'm very excited. I am panicking because I have no idea where to go with him next.
We just started working with the moveable alphabet a couple of weeks ago- spelling out three letter words to match objects. Can I keep him doing this long enough to figure out where to go next? Where do we go next?
Don't mind me... just panicking over here

No worries Melinda I've been there. All of a sudden the child is ready to go, and you thought you had time. You're doing fine! It's time to rejoice - something just clicked!
I really like the pink, blue, green series. It seems straightforward, and I am impressed. All of phonics is really built/taught the same way (from the same building blocks - short vowel, long vowel, phonemes, and some sight words) You just need to decide what package you want to proceed with. You're already comfortable with the Montessori approach, and your ds is already using the moveable alphabet, so the pink, blue, green series seems like a simple, straightforward fit for you.
I really feel like a walking commercial for Lori, but if you're worried, you could pop over to her site, download the pink series and get him moving tomorrow if you don't feel you have enough for him to work with. I've been considering doing this myself. I have a 6 yr old that just took off on his own, and I haven't been able to catch up yet! I'm considering downloading the whole series, though I suspect he would just need to spend a little time in the green series on a couple of phonemes he hasn't encountered yet...but then I've got a little guy just a couple of years behind him, so we could use the set again.
I do really like the Little Angel Readers. There would be no need to use the workbooks, I sort of feel like they're busy work (though if you're pregnant and in a pinch, they're hard to beat.) You could get the readers for your son as he starts wanting to "just read." I also have CHC's Phonics for Little Folks program and they're adorable little books are hard to beat for the price! Any readers will do, these are just my preferences because I love the gentle Catholic themes.
HTH! Hugs to you!

Hip hip hooray!!!! It's a magical time, isn't it!?!
I totally agree with everything that Jennifer said. There are so many thing you can do with the pink series!
We are plugging away with the free pink cards I downloaded (I think from JMJ)and dd really enjoys them, though her brain has yet to click as well as it seems your son's has. She really likes matching the objects to the words, so I'd start collecting those!
I love that your son made up his own "hidden word" game! Reminds me of the secret words presentation.I bet he will have fun with that one!

Thanks for the advice! This just caught me off guard, and I feel like I need a road map. I will check into all your suggestions. I figure we can keep going with the hidden word game for a few days/weeks at least while I get ready for the next step- now that I know what it is!

You just brought back memories for me I remember one ds who loved me to hide the sounds and then words around the room and he would find them. Oh fond memories
Such and exciting time, enjoy.

I just downloaded a whole set of pink language cards from the MM site. Ds can help me laminate them tomorrow (his biggest thrill is to run the laminator)- and off we will go, until it's time to move on to the blue series...
We're making some memories here, too
