The Great Lessons topic got me thinking about montessori history. I am curious about the presentations of Fundamental Needs of people, and the cards and timelines that go with it. I'm not sure I have the name of it right, I am thinking of the sets of cards for different time periods with shelter, food, clothing etc that the child can compare horizontally and vertically. Has anyone done this presentation/work with their kids? Did you make the cards or buy them from somewhere? I know I have read about this somewhere but can't recall where. I am so glad Karen Tyler is offering elementary training in the fall. Thanks!

Ooh - the cards sound really neat - like they could be used to add a Montessori flavor to any living history program. I hope someone remembers where these are - I haven't come across anything like this yet.
I do use the Catholic World History Timeline which has a number of cards to copy and laminate and use with our timelines - I think they are a pretty nice grouping, but I would love to be able to add some cultural elements if anyone knows where these are.
Thanks for starting this Andrea!

Ok I found what I was talking about here:
Albanesi
Due to the price I think I will have to make my own! I really like the idea of these. Thanks for mentioning the Catholic Timeline and Guide, I have been seriously considering buying that to make a timeline work that could spark research.
I am working on materials for the Great lessons and key lessons- using the table of contents of Miss Barbara's albums- which are also on my wishlist (keeps getting longer and longer somehow!)
While I was looking for the history of fundamental needs cardds I saw alot of other cool things at Albanesi! I just love the hands-on, independent approach of montessori, so developmentally appropriate. But I am rambling.
Here is another version of fundamental needs (this seems to be more world geography than history):

Andrea, you mentioned Karen Tyler (Montessori for the Earth?) offering elementary course in the fall.
Have you done other courses with Karen?
I'm asking because I have been looking at her site, to help me along and give me some structure and direction.
I have her elementary outline, and it does go deeply into the Great Lessonsa and timeline of life.
Or should this be another thread???

You can save yourself a lot of time and $$ if you belong to the mm_share yahoo group. I know there are some cards for this in the files section of the group. Beyond that, you can post to the group whenever you are looking for anything and you can share what you make with others...it is a good thing!

No Karen Tyler calls her site something else- Worldwide montessori? Thanks for the Montessori for the Earth mention- I emailed her about elementary albums! So now I have lots of options:
Miss Barbara
Karen Tyler
Montessori for the Earth
Lori Musa - a contact Karen gave me who runs a more formal el training class
And I am taking Karen's 3-6 training and love it- it really put it all together for me! I know many in this forum are signing up for her new class starting July 1.

I have a wonderful picture book Children Just Like Me and I'm thinking some nice color copies of the pages of the fundamental needs from this book will be an excellent way to introduce this concept. We will also be using it for our Geography studies so it will be a close tie in
And I have to second the mm_share group, I get daily emails from the group with so much information, you will be amazed!
Blessings!

Great ideas! I have the Children Just Like Me book and was wondering how to best use it. Love the color copy idea. I also have Material World, which is fantastic and Hungry Planet by the same authors, which is also perfect for this.
I had it all worked out how to use them with my older son, but had not thought about how to use them with dd. I think the fundamental needs approach will work well, but from a geographical rather than a historical perspective this year. We are a bit burned out on history right now and will be focusing on geography/world cultures this year instead.

Thank you Andrea for the clarification about Karen Tyler and Montessori for the Earth.
And thank you Donna Marie for the Children Like Us sticker book idea. We have Children Like Us, Children Like Us Celebrations and Life Like Mine - all from DK and all very beautiful books.
A while ago I made some nomenclature cards using another DK sticker book, which I think was called Barbie Around the World Sticker Book. It had stickers of Barbie dolls dressed in different national costumes from around the world, plus some basic information about each country.
I colour coded the cards in line with Montessori continent colours and separated into sets for each continent. They were suprisingly quick to make.
I still have the Word template I used. Let me know by PM if you are interested in a copy (if you can find the book ).
