Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was planning to make my own, with Dh on board to make some simple wooden frames. Then I saw these at Oriental Trading Company. I know they are not wood, but I also like the bright colors.

Any opinions?

Dressing boards take up quite a bit of room, and most children learn to dress themselves quite well without them, so I haven't worried too much about not having them. They do do a nice job of isolating the task so that a child can concentrate on one thing at a time, particularly helpful if you have a child who wants to dress themselves alone but really needs help.

I have made shoe tying cardboard shoes that work well and are very cheap to do.

I have acquired the dressing dolls from DSS and also a Melissa and Doug puzzle that has a buckle, a lace, a snap, a button etc. These are cute alternatives too.

Melinda,
I was going to comment that I don't do dressing boards - we have clothes! But after I looked at your link I bookmarked it in my "wish list" file because I LOVE them! They're quite affordable, and they're not visually distracting - just simple little dressing boards. I am in love! I say go for it! I would love to have a set!

My son loves the dressing frames I've made - he only uses each one for a couple of hours, but just that opportunity to focus on that one task for no other purpose than to practice it, he got it. My daycare children seem to take a bit longer at it; not sure why.

All I did was cut rectangles out of cardboard and stapled on pieces of old clothes (we've got a lot of donated clothing that is simply inappropriate for actual wearing, so I cut it up and have a HUGE pile of cloth for everything we could imagine) with the appropriate fasteners. When they are going to be used, I set them up in an old dish-drainer where the plates are held.

It almost seems a waste of time or money to either make or pay for something that doesn't get used much, but the dressing frames sure serve their purpose, whether it's the puzzles I've seen, clothing on dolls or the self, or the frames.

I do like those ones at Oriental Trading - perhaps if these ever wear out, I'll head that direction for replacements.

I made some out of old baby clothes and some wooden picture frames. It was pretty easy to do. I cut the clothes to size and then used a staple gun to attach them to the frame.

I was thinking of doing the same, inspired by your ideas and pictures on your blog! However, I now have about 20 ideas for projects to get done, plus a move coming up. So these look very attractive to me. But we'll see...

I have that blog post saved, I was so impressed by your idea.

I think my sister had sent me that link to Oriental Trading Company a while back. The price is really good. Do you think the frames are durable?

That's the thing- I'm not sure how they would hold up. They are made of vinyl, so they should be durable, but I don't know how the frame is put together... still thinking this one over....

If I made my own, what would I use for buckling and lacing? I have clothes I could use for buttoning and zipping. I don't have anything with multiple buckles, though, I have the Melissa and Doug skills board, which the kids really like, so I wanted to expand into the frames.

Hi -- this is my first post. It's great to be here, and to read about everyone's ideas and experiences. By way of introduction, I'm the mother of a 3-year-old, a toddler, and another little one due this fall. My husband and I have been working on integrating Montessori principles into our Catholic family life since before our first child was born. Four years later -- after much reading, and even more "experimenting" -- I think we're finally starting to get the hang of it!

At the moment, the only dressing frame we have is the bow tying one, bought from Nienhuis when they were having a sale last year. It's lovely, and bows are fairly hard to learn (my 3-year-old is nowhere near ready yet), so I think it will get plenty of use over the years.

I'm also planning to make or buy a few "easier" frames (snapping, large buttons, buckling, and zipping), mostly to give my toddler a wider choice of non-messy things to do in our main classroom area. He's not quite ready for the sensorial materials yet, and there's a 100% risk of dumping if he's in the vicinity of water, beans, etc. I figure that we can hang the frames on removable 3M hooks -- 2 hooks per frame -- on the sides of a bookcase, so they won't take up much space.

BTW, Bambini has the frames for $10 each, though I'm not sure about their shipping costs or quality.

For buckling, how about a couple of belts, somehow cut and attached to a frame?

I like the lacing boot idea. I have a Melissa and Doug one but we've not used it yet.

If there's anyone else in the Northern VA area we could go in together on the Oriental Trading ones and save $2 each...anyone, anyone?
