I'm drawn to these, but the knobbed cylinders are pricey. I found a great set for an incredible price here
My questions:
Are these worth the buy?
What age range do you use these?
Are they just sitting on your shelf after a couple of presentations?

That is where I am ordering mine from as well.
Have you read the presentations for them at MWEI? here
I have not used them yet (because I don't have them yet LOL!), but the presentations make them sound so good. I know we will get lots of use from them here.

YES! I love this site. I spent Saturday printing off all of the presentations there and putting them in a notebook. It's really helping me narrow some things down and visualize how useful a particular item might be!
BTW, I was at Lowe's this weekend and picked up a set of really neat "texture" cards for 50cents each. In their miniblind section, they have a display of samples of different materials they can special order mini blinds in. Small, but sturdy card stock with two examples on each card. There are all sorts of wonderful textures, bamboo of varying sizes and shapes, smooth wood, mottled plastic. I bought two of each card so that there would be a match. I'm going to make my own texture box with them. I also thought they would be neat in a mystery bag. I have a few other wooden Noah's ark toys that are small that all come in pairs that will work well in the mystery bag.
I'm glad to know you're really interested in the cylinders too!

I think because I still have two younger boys we will also get these, I'm not sure about when, as I have SO MUCH on my list and I'm struggling with the idea of collecting too much at once dilemma
I LOVE the MWEI site, it's my new best friend besides all your lovely blogs and this board My poor dh is starting to wonder...

Well, I bought these as Christmas gift for my children last year, and they have gotten alot of use. My daughter (just turned 3) loves to take them out over and over- just like those montessori books said she would LOL. She just does one block at a time. My boys (5 and 8) who are a bit old for them like to add more challenge by doing all 4 blocks at once and mixing up all the cylinders.
I do recall that when I first presented them to her she wasn't interested- they just kept getting dumped out and used as pretend food. I put them away for about 4 months and when I brought them back out she loved them! I think matching the age of the child is pretty important.
I got mine from Alison's and they aren't super good quality- I have had cylinders get stuck and had to prey them out and had the knobs come off. That has been a bit frustrating but then again I couldn't afford the Nienhaus ones.

I got my knobbed cylinders from Montessori Outlet. They're fairly good quality, but my 4 yo -- then 3 yo -- wasn't too interested in them. However... he started out working with them just fine. It was only after his older brother started using them as laser cannons that he lost all interest in them except as laser cannons. They've been downstairs ever since.
I think he may be a bit old for them now, but I'll have more kids to try them out on, so I'm hopeful.
As far as the knobless cylinders go... I don't have these, but I am thinking about getting them, particularly for the babies when they're a little older. Again, I'm not sure if my 4 yo is past the best age for them?

Angel,
I don't think he is too old for the knobbed cylinders. You could more than one set out to make it harder. You could blindfold him. Perhaps have him replicate a few using clay. Fun extensions are endless!

Yikes! This really concerns me! This is what I dislike about having to shop online. It is so hard to judge quality!
Now I am going to have to re-think my order agin!
