Hi there, I'm not sure if this is the right "room" to post this in. But I'm on the lookout for a great set of basic, wooden unit blocks. I can't find them in any educational stores around here. The ones I see are all smaller pieces of wood, brightly painted and such.
The problem is that online it looks like I'll be paying a pretty penny for such a set, especially after shipping. Still, it's worth it when I can gather the $$$. Do you know of a place that sells these for a reasonable price? This is kind of what I had in mind, but I groan at the price:

Ellie, what an interesting site, I'm looking forward to browsing it later if I get a chance. I would have to agree that they are very pricey. I link you to my favorite construction toy site and you can see if there's anything that might work from them:
Constrcution Toys!
Let me know if this doesn't work and I'll see what else I might find!!
HTH! Blessings!

We bought this very set sixteen years ago! They are superbly crafted out of hard maple wood. It is still one of my boys’ favorite toys. We paid one hundred dollars back then. I remember dh being quite distraughted that I had spent so much money for some pieces of wood. But now he agrees it has been a very good investment. You can see the little boys at play with them on my old blog. Here is the link. Click on the picture to have a better look at them.
Julie's Stuff also sell a small set of unit blocks. She is a 4reallearner member.

Ellie,
I recently bought a set of unit blocks for my son. I got them on Amazon.com. I think there were 60 blocks in the set, for around $40.

Another site I LOVE is Fat Brain Toys. They have the same Melissa & Doug set that Julie has (a couple dollars more than Julie's), but they also have some larger sets. HTH.

Ellie - We bought these (same as at Julie's Stuff) and I've heard several times (including from my dh) that they wish there were more....probably to make grand creations, like at Louise's! But, even two sets of these are less expensive than $180 and even more blocks, but not as many shapes.
There are more unusual shapes in the Community Play Things set....arches, boards, curves, etc. 92 blocks in 16 shapes. As opposed to 60 blocks in maybe 10-12 shapes.

Just wanted to add- I got a 50 piece set similar to the Amazon set at Tuesday Morning this week for $19.99. Very nice blocks- I wish I had bought two sets!
