Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I would love to hear your thoughts on using technology to teach. I have utilized educational computer games and curriculum (like Teaching Textbooks, Mavis Beacon, educational DVD's) on and off. I have very visual learners and I do believe that one way for them to learn is through something that is visually represented in an engaging manner. I also recognize that they are growing up in a technological era and will be working in a world that uses technology for many, many jobs.

However, I sometimes feel like we should ditch all use of technology for learning until they are high school age.

I would honestly love to hear your thoughts on this. I know it can be a hot topic and I do not want to rustle any feathers. I am wondering how you have decided to use technology in your homes and why.

Thanks in advance,

Coming from a homeschooling family that didn't do technology at all, I'm not a fan of the no tech approach. In today's world technology is all around us - not starting early puts kids at a severe disadvantage. It took me over a year to catch up tech-wise in high school when I switched to public school, and I still don't understand how to use a graphing calculator properly {something that was taught in 7th and 8th grades} which has hindered College level math classes.

We use DVD's a lot - nearly every day. If it fits into what we're learning we watch it. Computers we use daily too - but I don't teach typing until basic printing handwriting is learned. After that - everything that can be typed is.

We haven't yet used tech games/programs for learning yet, but I know we will soon.

well if we can say it's definately a problem if they spend more time at the computer than with family.. then you just need to find a balance between that and nothing that works for you. With a large family and one computer.. my kids definately get a SHORTER time than others might. And since I'm happy with math for the lower grades in books.. then having just the oldest using the computer for math so that she's more independant and leaving me more time to help the younger children is a good thing.
