I haven't found much on these boards about Angelicum. Is anyone using it? I would appreciate any thoughts/reviews. How does it compare with Kolbe?

I looked into a long time ago-2/3 years ago. There is a Yahoo group that doesn't seem to get much activity but is Angelicum users. Just type in Angelicum academy in Yahoo groups and it should come up. I remember that I chose not to try it because I did not care for the good books that were for the PK through grade 3. I found them too advanced or too odd for the early years. I also thought their National Geographic geography program looked awesome but everyone on teh Yahoo group said it was way too hard. So I went on to look at Kolbe, MODG and sonlight. Now I just do my own thing.

Just my two cents worth on Angelicum's list of good books for P-1st. We don't use the Angelicum curriculum but I do try and follow their choice of books for our literature and narration (some copywork too). We have made it through most of these books and my eldest, now in first grade, was just enthralled. I love the language used in these books and I love hearing him use vocabulary that other kids his age might not use.

Maybe this is obvious, but it seems to me that until 2nd grade the list is meant for read alouds, mom to child, and then in the 2nd grade they seem to be at reading level. Anyway, it could depend a lot on the child - my eldest is finishing up his first grade year and just read Black Beauty, which is on the 3rd grade list. On the other hand my 5 year old doesn't seem to have the same attention span but, alas, I haven't been doing the 'good book' read alouds with him lately...I think if I require him to sit and listen he will do as well as his brother. The boys just love those Lang Fairy Books!

We used Angelicum for 5th grade when we got back to homeschooling (dd is now in 12th). I needed the assurance that a boxed curriculum could provide at the time. However soon after we found we liked to substitute too many things and it became evident that we would have more time just putting together our own. My dd did enjoy the Socratic discussions and having a "consultant" to ask questions when we needed to. These days I just use the Angelicum bookstore lists as a reference -- for books we might miss otherwise... I'm considering Kolbe though for ds who will be in high school in a few years.

I know nothing about this program, Jeanne, but your question caught my eye. Maybe it appeals to you because you are sensing that it is right for you and your family? Our family has made decisions about hsing that haven't been big hits with others, but have worked well for us!
