Can anyone review A Thomas Jefferson Education Companion? Those TJ books are pretty pricey. Worth it?

I can't review because I had not even heard of it. So, thanks for the heads-up.  I think it looks great from the excerpts on Amazon. I loved the first book, and bought some of the papers, but still have felt at a loss as to how to implement it at home.
Looks like just the summer reading I need before making any curriculum decisions.
I will let you know when I have gotten a chance to read it.

I have The Home Companion. Here are some of the things it addresses: how to mentor, how to start a mom school, how to start book discussions in your family as well as in the community, how to create a master plan for your family. There is also a chapter on how Dianne Jepson implements TJE in her home.
For me, this book was worth the price because it put a bit more flesh on the Love of Learning Phase. My oldest just turned 8 (today!) and this book gave me some ideas on how to prepare her for learning on her own. There are also suggestions on how teach life skills to your kids that interested me.
There is little discussion on Core or Scholar Phase. I thought most of the book dealt with Love of Learning. This is where I am at right now, so it interested me.
I can't tell you if it is worth the price, because we all educate our children differently, so what might be of interest to me might not put a spark into anyone else's eye. But for the season of life that I am in now, I know that I will go back to this book periodically just for encouragement as I delve into the middle school years.
Molly, have you read the Recipe of Success booklet that the DeMilles offer? This gives more of an idea on how to implement TJE on all levels.

I have finally started reading my TJE (which I got for my birthday in January!) - Julia I was inspired by your post on the LCC thread - and wow, I can hardly put it down. I finally read LCC last week - and gleaned information from there (plus Leonie's postings have been awesome - with the links to Andrew Campbell's blog articles)- but TJE is just great reading. It is reminding me of so many of the reasons I really wanted to homeschool for in the first place. I am about halfway through (stayed up half the night reading!. I did not even know there was a Home Companion.

Happy Birthday to your dd!! My twin boys turn 8 today too! They have been awake for a long time full of excitment!! Baseball theme in gifts etc. Their Dad took the morning off for mini golf with them - but it is pouring with rain - so we are playing a Baseball trivia game!!!

Marilyn,
I have the Recipes for Success papers on Core and Love of Learning. Is there something more I would get from the book?
I am trying decide whether I need to get it and read it before making final curriculum decisions. I guess I am looking for more of the nitty-gritty, day to day stuff. There was some of that in the papers, from what I remember (guess I should pull them out again first!  ), but I still felt like I wanted more specifics. I always want more specifics!

I don't think you need it...
First, let me admit that it took me awhile to persuade myself to read a book which begins with a "Forward" instead of "Foreword" . But once I got past that editorial glitch, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was reading a series of poorly edited talks. I'm not finished with the book, but I don't feel like it's added anything to my repertoire. There are different labels on things we already do, but not much that's genuinely new. For you, Molly, I think the (considerable amount of) money could be better spent elsewhere, particularly since you have the original book and the papers. You've got a whole lot of experience and you've done a whole lot of reading. you can live without this book. If you're really curious, do some (free) surfing. You might want to start with this
archive of TJed carnivals and posts.
Please don't misunderstand, I think what you've already read is well worth reading; I'd just hate to see you spend more money on the companion, particularly since some of the bloggers linked do a better job of fleshing it all out, imo.

I agree that A TJEd renames many of the things we are already doing in our homes.
For new homeschoolers, the original TJEd book condenses many ideas/philosophies succinctly into a few principles....principles which can be individualized/modified by each individual family.
The TJEd Companion is more about how a few families implemented the principles. It is my understanding that this book was written in response to homeschooling families requesting more concrete "how to's" after reading the original book or hearing the DeMille's speak. Most of us are likely beyond that point!
Having said that, the TJEd Carnivals have one mission....sharing how other families implement any ONE or more principles in their own home. Much emphasis is really given to individualizing the educational process based on a family's core values and canon book (ex) The Bible.
Often I learn more from kindred spirits in the trenches with me....and that is the purpose of the TJEd Carnivals vs. buying more books/tapes!
