I am an obsessive planner when it comes to school  . Right now, as I dive more and more into CM, I am doing my mid-school-year adjustment with curriculum.
So a couple questions:
1. Are the Latina Christiana DVD's worth the expense? I think I would get to Latin way more regularly (as in we never get to it right now) and make it starting point of the school day if I had these. Opinions?
2. Has anyone used the Christian Studies books? I think my son would love to do his Bible History this way, but I am concerned about it being presented with a Catholic understanding of scripture. Is Memoria Press Catholic? Just wondering...its not that they have to be in order for me to buy it.

Hello from one obsessive planner to another,
I have not seen the Latina Christiana DVD. However, we are using the Prima Latina DVD this year. I thought that it was worth the investment. I use the DVD as the "teacher." I will sit down with my dd watching the lesson. However, there are times when I have to help one of my other children and my dd can watch the lesson on her own. I plan to purchase the Latina Christiana DVD for next year.
My understanding is that Memoria Press is not Catholic. I also am planning on purchasing the Christian Studies book for Bible History. I'm sure there will be some things that I will need to explain in detail. However, my dd is already fascinated with the differences between Catholics and Protestants so this doesn't bother me. In fact, these probing questions are making me a better Catholic.

The only product we have used from Memoria is Lingua Angelica, and it's lovely. For our musical family, it is a great intro to Latin for the younger kids, and a quick selection of fine Latin hymns for the older kids. If Memoria itself is not Catholic (I think that's true), this set certainly is. It even includes the Sign of the Cross, Ave Maria, and ordinaries of the Mass.

We are using LCI with the teaching DVD this year. It has been helpful for us. I am abysmal with languages. I sit there doing the work along with the children. I consider it almost as good as a private Latin tutor coming into our home.
Along with the vocabulary and grammar, there is a Latin phrase and sacred music practiced with each lesson. Pater Noster, Table Blessing, Adeste Fideles, Dona Nobis Pacem.

I have found the DVDs helpful. My 9 dd is doing LC I with the DVD. It frees me up to do other things while he watches the DVD. I don't know Latin so the DVD adds a lot of explanations that are not on the Teacher's Manual.
Regarding the Christian Studies, this is our second year using it. We have enjoyed it. It is a rigourous (sp?) course if you do it as it is written. I have the Student's book, the TM and the Golden Children's Bible. The TM has some background information plus the answers. The course is very comprehensive: it includes copywork, memory work, map work, review questions, timeline of Bible events,tests and quizzes. That said I don't use that way. We basically read the bible text for the lesson and do the review questions.
It is my understanding that MP is not Catholic but I think some of the people that have develop their material are Catholics. I am not sure though. I have not found anything against the Catholic Church or against Catholic Church teaching so far.

We have used the LC I DVD and we really enjoy it. I usually sit down with the dc and watch it along with them. You could say we are learning Latin together! I plan to continue with LC II.
We also use the Famous Men of Rome in conjunction with the Latin. There is a brief part on the unit tests that covers FMOR. It is also a great book when studying Roman history.
Although they are not Catholic (but I believe that I was told that someone at Memoria is Catholic), there are many references to the Catholic faith and to parts of the Mass. It is always handled respectfully.
We have also used their Traditional Logic program, but not the Christian Studies.

Thank you so much everyone. I have used Prima Latina and loved it. We were supposed to move into Latina Christiana (I have the books!) but I keep pushing the Latin off because I feel like I have to really read those lessons through a few times before I can teach them. It sounds like the DVD's will do exactly what I need them to and not give me an excuse to not "do" Latin anymore. I actually have the Lingua Angelica CD already. I think I will invest in rge books as well.
And I think I am sold on the Christian Studies for my sons Bible History next year.
One more question, is their edition of Famous Men of Greece very different from the "old" one (don't remember the publisher right now).

We are doing the Christian studies this year. If you go to the website of "All Catholics Books" you can print off a copy of the memory verses that are the Catholic Douay Rheims version instead of the KJV that is used in the program. The website also points out that a Catholic scholar reviewed the bible that is to be used in this program and found nothing objectionable and to be a neutral text. That is the only thing I changed so far using the program I just sub in the Catholic Douay Rheims verse for the memory verse in the text for the week.
We have found the DVD's very useful also for the Latin programs.

I dont use these yet but my friend does and she says-
Yes their version of the "famous men" books are very differnt than what is put out by other companies-
I cant remember the name of the other publisher either but they added a bunch of things that made it unsuable for a Catholic family.
Memoria's version does not have these additions.

We don't have the DVDs and don't miss them at all.
We're doing plenty of games anyway with Latin. I used to have the CD for Prima Latina, and the accent on it bothered me too much.

We didn't bother with the DVD...I find with littles around it is actually easier for my to speak as they seem to know that means quiet more than when the DVD is on.
Ditto with the accent....living in Canada and learning Latin with a Southern accent was a stretch
