With my one remaining computer minute, what do you all do about diaper rash? I've tried Desitin and Balmex and it's clearing up slowly, but my poor little guy (9 mos) is still suffering. Any miracle cures? Thanks!

It could be a yeast infection. Is it bright red? In the creases? Your ped should be willing to call in a scrip for an anti fungal cream. It's worth a try. Regular diaper creams won't clear it up if it's yeast.

(The boys can get yeast too.)

I just simply allow my baby to air his tush every few minutes everyday. Simply take off his diaper, lay him on a big towel, pull back the folds and blow gently at every cronk and cranny. If you are really open minded and he's a walker, then slip him in some loose baggy underwear (or pin the cloth diaper really loosely) and allow him to run around the backyard. Hope I haven't disgusted you by now.

Dr. Smith's Diaper Ointment always worked wonders for my children.

Are you using the Desitin creamy, or the traditional Desitin? That makes a difference. The old Desitin creates a barrier. I find the new creamy and Balmex rub off easily. If it's yeast, none of these ideas will clear it up.

But for my son, he required constant barrier methods...if I missed one application, the rash would come back or get worse. I would put a base of Aquaphor or Vaseline all over and then a thick layer of Desitin (traditional white stuff) over that. This method has worked for my son and other extended family members.

Ouch!

Some mothers find that using lansinoh is helpful for moist healing of not only sore nipples but also diaper rash.

Best wishes finding something that works for your sweetie .

Love,

The best thing that works for our most persistant cases is a bath following each BM. Then air drying, then the regular Desitin. It seems that bathing the bottom makes a big difference is helping it heal.

Good luck. I know how sad their little bottoms can get!

I found a product down here is Mississippi that is great! It's called "Boudreaux's Butt Paste" (although it our house it's "Bottom" paste!) If you want, I can send a small tube. Also, if you have a hair dryer with a cool setting you can blow dry all those nooks and crannies after a bath.

Molly, I've seen that sold in VA, at least in our little store in Manassas, Baby=2=Teen. It is good stuff.

We can't use anything with lonolin. Mary Chris taught me that Balmex m ixed with Aquaphor is good for all things topical. I like a mixture of Balmex, Aquaphor and Badger Baby Balm.

I'm off to Target this morning, so I'll be looking for "bottom paste"(as it would also be known at my house ), aquaphor and badger baby balm. The thick desitin seems to be helping, but progress is slow.

Bridget, thanks for bringing up the possibility of a yeast infection. I'm pretty certain it's not since we are seeing a slow improvement. BUT, it never would have occurred to me that he might have had a yeast infection. Would that be clearing up without meds?

Jen, do you live near Baby-2-Teen? We LOVE that store! That's where we bought Jeanne's nursery furniture many moons ago, and it's still going strong 5 children later. We also bought her bedroom furniture there, and countless other things. My best friend lives in Manassas, too, just off of the Prince William Parkway, maybe 10 minutes from the Liberia/PWPkwy intersection.

Thank you all for your help--I don't know how many families are on the boards, but we must have cared for hundreds or even thousands of little bottoms between us!

Molly,
OTC yeast medication like Monistat will clear up a yeast infection quickly if that's what it is.

Yep, it's nearby. I like to give the store business because it's a local, family owned store. We have found some good things along the way, even some discounted items...gotta love that.

God bless!

My sister is also lanolin sensitive. If you start to have problems with your regular applications of Aquaphor, it might be a sensitivity to the lanolin alcohol. Usually one doesn't have a reaction, but if one of your children is extra sensitive....

I did find the "bottom paste" at Target. It's interesting stuff--the color, texture and scent are so unexpected for diaper cream! It's very easy to use and wash off, and will be easier for frequent daytime use than desitin. I started using it right away. After his bath last night I smeared him with creamy Desitin for the night--we'll see how he looks when he gets up.

Target didn't have Aquaphor or Badger Baby Balm, so that made my decision easy!!

You can find Aquaphor at COstco. It's behind the pharmacy desk. Badger balms are at Wegman's. You can also make your own. Chari's daughter Anne is going to teach me how this summer!

I forgot that I also use A&D ointment as a base and then the traditional Desitin. Our son has eczema problems so after baths, we lube him up all over with Aquaphor and then treat the diaper things separately.

Dave's sister, whose daughter has similar problems, had tough diaper rash. Ointment like Neosporin, Bacitracin (sp?) also healed up the really bad rash for her daughter. After puttting the ointment on, she would cover with Vaseline or Aquaphor and then top it off with Desitin.

Aquaphor I've seen also at Giant, but it's so much cheaper at Costco.

Molly, do try the old type of Desitin, at least at night if your trials don't work. The creamy tends to wipe off after time.

Just giving you different ideas to try out until you find what works for you!
