Okay ladies ... it has been awhile since I have had a baby! Even though she is number 10, I forget all the secrets to getting a baby to sleep for longer stretches during the night. She is five months old and still waking up about every 2 hours or less. She is fine as long as I nurse her. Any suggestions?

Well, I am anxious to hear this one as well. My grandson is 15 months and still wakes up crying and "rocking" many times every night (I realize this is likely due to past neglect). I am going nuts from lack of sleep! Of course, no nursing here, but I sure could use any other advice! All the things that worked with my own dc (full belly, no juice after 6, bath, quiet, soothing nature sounds,etc) just are not cutting it here.

I read somewhere at one point that sometimes children who have a lot going in their homes wake up in the night for some snuggle time. The suggestion was to be sure to get plenty of mom-and-baby time during normal waking hours so that baby doesn't try to arrange for that time in the middle of the night. (Yes, I realize the guilt-inducing potential of this idea).   

The thing that worked best with my own dc was to bring them into bed with mom and dad. Something about the companionship with other sleeping people seemed to work.

Mine were the opposite , they sleep much better in the crib. And from the start I lay them down while still awake so they learn to go to sleep on their own. Right away I get a few hours stretch. I do fall asleep nursing in bed but I usually get up at some point and put them in the crib.

I do not have problems with milk supply and my babies are a good size to start with. It is better to nurse more often if you have problems with either of these.

However all night is not my goal. Just long stretches. My 18 month old still wakes up once and I LOVE rocking her in the middle of the night. And the three and five year olds often come snuggle in bed with us at some point during the night. If we are getting crowded out I just move them back to their beds.

We co-sleep. Night wakings are solved by "playing dead," or swaddling when very young. My sons all slept best on their tummies. GASP!!! The doctors would flog me but hey, it works for us... and we feel like this is the best situation for our family.
