Hi everyone - my little guy is going to be turning 3 soon and I have no idea what to suggest for gifts - we do not have the need or space for twaddle. Things I am considering that I would appreciate your opinion of:
- Gears Gears Gears - anyone used these?
- Wedgits - I have looked at for ages - any opinions?
Thanks

How about pattern blocks with a corresponding book? We got them for Christmas and my 3-yr-old loves them. I got ours from Rainbow Resources but they are lots of places.

Definitely the Wedgits! My kids, even the babies, love them as do visiting friends, grown-ups, etc. Just keep the smaller white pieces in a separate bin around babies - choking hazard
God bless,
Christine

We have both -- the wedgits are more popular with mine than the gears. That said, my older ones (4+) are the ones enjoying them rather than the littler siblings.
My almost 3 yr old (and everone else) loves the items at

cars and the good plastic animals (big - around 6-8 inches) are the most popular toys for my littles

We got our 3 yo Wedgits for Christmas and they are a big hit for everyone - including the 13 yo! We also have gears, but my 3yo isn't much interested. His favorite things right now tend to be his knights and castle, play animals (as Jodie mentioned), and his all time favorite - his tools! He's quite into the tools and tool belt!

Books!
When people ask what to get for our children, we always ask for books. We too don't have a lot of room for toys and there are so many really beautiful children's books out there. We also give our children book plates (those stickers you place in the front of the book that say who the book belongs to). If the book is a keeper, we also write on the sticker who gave them the book and the date. Barnes & Noble has lots of choices of book plates.
One other idea would be child-size garden tools. Maybe give them a corner of the yard where they can garden. Depending on the ages of our kids any given summer we either have beautiful flowers or a mud pit!!
Good luck!

Thank you all so much for the great ideas. I have been wanting to write and thank you - so thank you Waverley for bumping this up.
We have many of the above things because of the older kids. Matt's birthday is coming up next week - and I still have not got anything! - but have ideas. Matt has also moved into a phase of really enjoying sitting down and doing activities. We have seen such a change in his wish to sit down and concentrate. Things he is really into right now:
1)Large floor puzzles - will sit for ages doing them and redoing them. I may get a couple of the Melissa and Doug ones - US Map and World Map
2) Lauri perception and Math puzzles
3) Montessori type activities - pouring, pipettes, sorting beans, using tweezers and transferring etc
4) Coloring, painting and doodling (I am thinking of geting him some Stockmar)
5) Pattern blocks and tangrams (easy)
6) Listening to Jim Weiss CDs on his sister's bright pink headphones!!!
7) Reading corner - setting up his mat and "reading' a selection
His older siblings and I are making him a set of file folder games for his birthday - I am really excited about this - tried one on him and he LOVED it.
Thanks again for your help.

My 2 1/2 year old son received Magneatos for Christmas and they have been a huge hit with him and all of his big siblings. They are really just a younger version of Magnetix, which my big guys have, but they all play with the Magneatos every day!
