Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am trying to figure out how to fit everyone around the table once we have our next baby. We have a smallish kitchen and table which seats 6. Our dining table only seats 6 too. (dates from when we got married 15 years ago - and the seat are big heavy ones with white cushioning!!!!) I am debating whether to get a pedestal table for the kitchen as we eat more in here. Or try and save up for a longer dining room table - and just have our meals in here. Where do you find long tables? I noticed a thread about chairs somewhere - I will try and find this - as it is always a problem trying to find chairs that are right for kids.

Thanks for any advice you have.

Marilyn,
(Merry Christmas! )

Save up for a bigger table.

I had the same thoughts a few years ago, so I went over to an "as is" sale (IKEA, in this case). I was able to get a table that seats 10 (14 in a pinch) for $200 because it had a scratch. Yeah. Like a table for a family will be scratch free for long .

Save for the larger table! We have a large one in the dining room and eat all meals there. Your new little one can be in a highchair with its own tray while you save.

In the meantime, have you considered replacing the chairs with benches? You can fit alot of little ones in that way!

We splurged on a big table that will fit 10. We opted for benches rather than chairs, and each bench fits 5 children. We did have to have both the table and benches specially made, but to us it was worth it to be able to all sit down for a meal together.    If we are blessed with more, we will probably do 2 tables.

We have a pretty tight space in our combined kithen/dining area. Our table has drop leaves, and extra leaves, which we can put down, or take out, when we need more room around the table for traffic. We also have am older, side table that sits not far away, which also has drop leaves...we use both tables if we have overflow from guests. The space is so small that everyone still feels close, even if they have to sit at separate tables...it kind of feels like we're at a restaurant together!

We've done something similar to the bench idea that others shared...instead of a bench we have an antique church pew on the wallside of our table, which gives kind of a booth effect, and fits several little ones; it's a favorite spot when friends visit. Most of our furniture is secondhand...you could try that route until a larger table is more affordable.

I am sooo excited!

We just got a Broyhill table and it seats 10 nicely and you can always squoosh in a few more.    The table and the chairs came to about $3,000. That is an absurd amount of money to pay but we looked for years and found nothing. Finally when the leg on our 6 seater came off, we knew it was time.

There is a picture of it on my blog!

It is probably one of the nicest things we have ever bought and our only piece of "good furniture". Everything is just regular stuff that you find here and there on sale etc.

We get so much enjoyment out of that table! (I'm getting really old or really domesticated)(I was a career chic who wanted a sports car!)

I hope you find something sweet and NOT so expensive.

Alice R

Alice,
Your table is beautiful and guess what -- I have the same chandelier in my diningroom ! Our table isn't as beautiful, but I bet no one here has one as big.

Now my husband built our diningroom table and I think he had a "if you build it they will come" moment because it is about 8'5" x 5'3" -- without the 3' leaf.
It seats 12 people without the leaf and 16 with it in. I actually talked him down in size . Passing the salt takes on athletic agility in our family. He built this when we only had two children and were debating a third -- but holiday dinners are very comfy at our house.

I asked him and he said it cost about $500 to build it. It is just a plain table with straight legs. Little house on the prairie style I guess -- but this table would take up the whole prairie house. And our chairs are a mix of many styles -- which bothers my husband more than me. I'm easy when it comes to furniture.

So Marilyn, if your handy you too can build to your dimensions fairly inexpensively.

That is a great table, Alice! Beautiful and functional too!

I also love the large round tables with lazy susans we sit at while on vacation. I have never seen a really good one, but if I could find it, I would in a second.

Marilyn, as someone who has literally grown out of three different kitchens with my brood, I feel your pain! [We are actually going to put an addition on the house in the next year to accommodate the lot of us.]

We have a nice round table in our kitchen that can seat eight. I believe it's 60" wide. I will try to find out where we got it from. I think it was Vermont and I think you can get them even bigger than 60".

We also have a dining room table that's set up for eight, but with the leaves can seat twelve. We only eat in the dining room if we have guests or if my dh and I are having a date at home.

Thanks everyone for the many ideas and good advice. I am going to start planning as soon as I am done with the all day morning sickness. ( I think that my dh is starting to dread my feeling well again because I will go into nesting/planning/organizing/rearranging the entire house!!!!)

MacBeth - I am going to check out Ikea. Cheryl - please send me details about your table when you can - I saw it in your kitchen post and thought it was beautiful - though may be too big for my kitchen. Alice - I love your Broyhill - I am not sure it would fit in our dining room. I want to get something that is sturdy and good quality - but not something I will worry about getting scratched - as the tables in our house get a lot of wear and tear!

Thanks again!

I found out that our kitchen table came from a place called Andy's in Greenfield, MA.
