Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What do you use to carry around the smaller children like a backpack? How do you carry the children once they are big enough to hold themselves upright, but too little to walk very far (or too slow and indirect!)

Thanks

Do you have a sling? I use my sling well into toddlerhood. I have even been known to stick a cranky or defiant three year old in it to calm her down. It makes them feel special when they are feeling unappreciated.

I have never been able to use a backpack. My back and neck just can't handle it.

The sling I have now is a Maya Wrap. It was a little pricey, but worth it. It doesn't have all the padding so it isn't as bulky and easier to use with a bigger child. I haven't used it for a little baby yet.

For us the sling caused neck and back problems! I'll look into Maya Wraps.

We had a nifty back pack at home which had enogh support around the edges so that the baby could fall asleep with a bit of support.

Cheers

We used an older version of this for years. Usually until the toddler discovers how much fun it is to drum daddy's head to pass the time.

Have you looked into Ergo?

They are pricey but I really love mine. You can use it until the baby weighs 60 lbs! The weight is distributed to your hips AND shoulders similar in design to a backpacking bag. They are much lighter that the metal frames type backpacks. I've used it on my two-year-old and 5 mth old and they don't feel like they weigh a thing and my back doesn't hurt! They do have an infant insert for newborns. You can check out the reviews I am actually going to purchase another one so that my husband and I can go trekking for longer periods of time with the two little ones.

We have a backpack similar to the one Mary Ellen mentioned. Ours is an Evenflo Trailtech. (The older ones were recalled.) It is very sturdy and comfortable for dad and littles, but not as light as the Ergo or sling.

I second the Maya Wrap. I've been using one for four years now after previous using Over the Shoulder Baby Holder (padded). I like the Maya Wrap better because it's not bulky and there are many ways to use it. (It also comes with an instructional DVD that's very helpful.) I've been showing moms how to use slings for over 10 years. The most important thing to remember is if it doesn't feel quite right, adjust the sling, adjust your baby and try again. Don't wear a sling that's making you uncomfortable. You'd be surprised how many moms are afraid to touch their sling and reposition them.

Hi!

Do the Maya wrap or Ergo carrier allow for the baby to sit in front facing outwards? Are there any others that do this that are comfortable? I don't think Renee will like facing towards me in the front. How old before you all switch your babies around to the back? I've always used strollers or a sling, but she doesn't like the sling. I still need to experiment with other ways of carrying her in it.
Thanks!

Well I'm going to go with a Baby Bjorn for now. I picked it up at a super baby & kids thrift store. It was new in the package and they were asking...hold on.....12.99! So far it seems pretty comfortable and the baby can sit facing forward on mom's front. She said they get Maya wraps in as well, so if I don't like it I can try something else at that price.

God bless,
Gwen in Denver

We picked up a back/front carrier from Walmart "Snugli Front and Back Soft carrier" for $28.50. Pockets everywhere lots of adjustable bits and it looks OK. Eric (11) carried around Rose for practice.

We'll see how it goes, but Rose was pretty happy to be in the pack.

Cheers

Oh my gosh, Gwen, what a steal, I mean, deal!!!! For my ds, he didn't like the sling but loved the Bjorn. And since he had reflux, he wanted to be held a lot, so it helped me everywhere. I brought along with my stroller, just in case he was inconsolable.

I would have snapped that up just to regift at a baby shower!!!

It's funny to me how this forum brings up subjects that I was just talking about to others. Is there a fly on the wall in my house? I've seen some great backpacks when we went to the Penn State Blue and White game -- free admission, so we see all sorts of baby carriers, with the covers and everything. I wanted to go up to all the parents and find out their sources instead of watch the game!

My son is 20 months, and still around 25 pounds, so he is portable if I could find something. Pushing around in the stroller isn't always the answer, or an option. The aluminum frame backpack carrier someone gave me I dislike intensely. Uncomfortable to me, and he doesn't feel snug, so he's nervous, thinking he'll fall out.

I somehow got onto this BabyStyle mailing list, which has the latest greatest trends that the rich and famous use. this page lists all their carriers. I was looking at the Euro carriers, including the hip carriers, but especially the Deuter KangaKid Backpack/Carrier. Without having reviews, though, it's extrememly pricey. Anyone use it, or know anyone who has?

I'm intrigued by the Ergo...maybe I'll make the plunge. Too bad Mother's Day has passed.
