Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

There is a pretty good article about large families on Yahoo! this morning.

It even has positive references to homeschooling.

Blessings,
Krisann

I read the article and thought "I thought this was about large families?" Only 1 is what I would call large - the Baseman's with 10 children.

And I have no idea when or who is calling children a "status symbol"? I'm thinking it's someone w/o chidlren. Who in their right mind thinks wiping bums, being puked on, cooking, and cleaning are status symbols?    Usually status symbols are things that can be bought? Are children commodities?

Interesting...

I am sure there will be an outcry about environmental waste with the articles comment on huge garbage amounts. By contrast I think large families are some of the most frugal in terms of waste.

I didn't get a real positive "vibe" from the article, kinda like "there are more and more parents off their rockers lately"!    I visited largerfamilies.com once, and was really turned off after reading the bios of the regular bloggers, esp. the fact that one tauted being a lesbian.

I agree about the waste issue. I think the family mentioned would be an exception. Most large families have less waste than smaller families. Most can't afford to buy as much to waste to begin with.

I got the same "vibe"...    I'm still laughing over the status symbol reference. Although it's *my* personal view that each of my children is worth more than a BMW, I've never before had anyone else reference them as a status symbol before. Too funny. I had to pass that part onto dh at work.

Don't laugh at the status symbol barb - I doubt very seriosly that it is coming from the families - but from some guru pondering things. As an example: I have been accused of trying to keep up with my sis (she has 10 and neither of us is in a race - our children are precious gifts from God, not commodities - but it seems society doesn't "get it") the last few times I was pregnant. Another one of those obnoxious comments that you learn to deal with, I guess.
