Anyone have any suggestions for getting more iron in my diet w/o taking an iron supplement? I had been taking a prenatal vitamin w/ iron in it, but it's making me constipated , which is not good w/ the varicose veins I have in that area...

My doc said that I was slightly anemic at my last visit, so I need to get more iron in my diet somehow...

Thanks...sorry for the graphic details!
Dawn

Hi Dawnie,

I'm right there with you. I have been anemic with previous pregnancies, even with the regular prenatal consumption and I am feeling sooooo run down with this pregnancy. You can take a supplement called Floradix Iron and Herbs. They sell it in health food stores. You take 2 tbs. a day and it is not nice tasting, I'll warn you, but it did help for me in the past.

Best,
Kathleen

the floradix is good.. a cheaper and possibly easier to stomach solution can be alfalfa tablets.. also cooking in cast iron pans is good.

Floradix - definitely! I am always anemic but not when taking the this stuff and it does not constipate.

Dawnie -

Do you think prune juice (which is high in iron) might be a reasonable addition to your diet, while addressing both "problems" (anemia and the other)?

Just a thought, which I have been known to apply.

Peace,
Nancy

Nancy,

I hadn't thought of prune juice for iron...I started eating prunes yesterday for my regularity problem . I didn't realize they could be a good source of iron, too.

I took Floradix during my last pregnancy...this is embarrassing to admit, but I'm not sure I can afford it right now. I think it cost about $30 for a 1 month supply. We're on a really tight budget right now.

I'll look into the alfalfa tablets.

What about foods rich in iron that I could eat more of?

Dawn

Beef, beans, lentils, blackstrap molasses, and pumpkin seeds are all high in iron. And I will second cooking in cast iron pans! Another thing to note is that vitamin C will aid in iron absorption, and calcium will inhibit it. So, have your iron-rich meals with some orange juice, tomatoes, etc., and save the milk for a little later.

Any suggestions for what to mix w/ blackstrap molassas so it's palatable? I know it's got lots of iron in it, but I couldn't stand to just swallow 1-2 tablespoons of it.

Thanks!

Here is a helpful list. I took the liquid chlorophyll with two of my pregnancies. It is pleasant tasting (mint) and worked to raise my iron levels.

Dawn when I could manage the molasses the easiest way was by the teaspoon.. and a few times a day.. with something to chase it down.. anything it's mixed into just takes that much longer to get down.. ick

Can't you just take stool softeners often?

I use to just take stool softeners often to help with the constipation.

Dawnie -

Another simple and practical constipation help is to drink lots and lots of water.

For lunch, you could eat a spinach salad with an orange. As far as salad greens go, the darker the leaf the higher the iron content; for example, spinach beats romaine which beats iceberg.

Peace,
Nancy

Dawn, I just make molassas 'tea'. A spoonful or two in a mug with boiling water. It tastes mild and sweet and has a consistancy just slightly thicker than water.

In the recesses of my brain I remember a warning about pumpkin seeds in pregnancy but I can't retrieve any more information than that.

For my last surgery I had read to drink warm water with molasses diluted. There's no way I could take the molasses straight, but diluted wasn't too bad.

Yeah, I could...I just wanted to try a more natural solution first.

Combine this suggestion with at least 1000 mg of magnesium (which is cheap) and you won't have any consitpation issues even if you take the iron.

Water doesn't help me as much as Elizabeth's advice -- magnesium. Something you need extra anyway!

Thanks for bringing this topic up, Dawnie. I'm currently fatigued. I have so many confounding variables that contribute to fatigue that the least I can do is assume that I'm anemic since I'm inclined (I'll get test results back next week) and start pumping up the iron. I'm with you...Floradix is great and pricey. For me, I'm thinking...

Molasses tea (brilliant...increase water and iron intake at the same time)

Alfalfa tablets

Prune tea (I soak the prunes in boiling water then drink/eat. I happen to have a bag of prunes that aren't very popular here )

Combine vit. C with iron rich foods and avoid combining calcium rich foods (Why DO OB/GYNS suggest that pregnant women eat Total cereal to increase iron...such an absorbtion problem!)

Continue cooking with cast iron skillet...use on grill.

Continue drinking adequate water.

Start taking 1000mg of Magnesium.

Sounds like a good start .

Thank you and love,

I changed my prenatal vitamins and found that helped out with the constipation.
