Does anyone have a homeschooled daughter 13 to 15 years old? Our eldest daughter, Ariel, will be 14 in July and we are trying to find other girls that are still homeschooling about her age that she can get in touch with and we can hopefully visit during our stay in the US.

Hmm. Maybe when my work contract is finished in two years time. We may then take the opportunity of checking out California and the West coast and points in between.
I the mean time, I'll contact you off list re contact details.

I have a very outgoing 14 yo dd. She'll be 15 in November. We live in Northern VA, just outside of Washington DC Where and when will you be in the U.S?

Libby is 14 and has become a pretty good correspondant. 
She will be in Massachusetts for 6 weeks during the summer, but will have e-mail. If you are planning a trip north, I'm sure she would love visitors, and concert spectators.
If you are up here earlier or later, she would love to give Ariel "The NYC Tour".

This is great! 
We are preparing for our big NY/Michigan trip at the moment. We will be seeing Mary Ellen in NY and Bridget in Michigan. Now we will arrange our trip to go through Virginia and see Faith and see if we can vist Macbeth too! I'll get in touch for more details off list.
For those that haven't read about our family, we are Australians here as part of my work and living in NE Georgia. We have been here almost 2 years and have about 2 years to go.
Ariel is pretty excited about meeting some more homeschooling girls.

David,
I have a question. If when U.S residents go to Austrailia and visit it's called going 'down under'. Do Austrailians have a similar term from coming up from down under to the states?
Just curious, pardon my ignorance...

Most of our friends thought we were 'crazy'.
Australians don't have a corresponding term for going to the Northern hemisphere, considering most of the places we would visit (England, Europe, Asia or North America) are all "up top".
And don't worry about any "ignorance" you may have about Australia. Documentaries and books only give part of the story. We have learned a LOT from our stay here.

Hi:
I am hoping I can get a crowd together to come to my house when the Bruggemans are here. The only fly in my ointment is a step dance recital on 6/5. If we can work around that I intend to have a bash! I have a LARGE yard and would welcome the chance to have everyone over. MacBeth: I was planning to ask those in IHM who "know" David and Lana through the message boards to come and I know my homeschool friends here in Lindenhurst want to meet the Aussies
David - are you sure you're ready for this?

We miss the big homeschool bashes! Friends of ours back home often organised gatherings of homeschooling familes. Considering that most of these families are on the larger size, often there were 100 to 150 people (once was up to just over 200!). Great fun for all concerned.
We are very excited at our upcoming trip. We may end up visiting quite a few HS families. Woohoo!
Mind you, the thought of getting 8 in a Suburban just scares my co-workers silly. They freak out at travelling a long distance with only 2 or 3 children.

Isn't it funny how people are amazed by traveling with large families?
I am currently freaking out a few people because I am going to travel for about a week alone with the five children. I am going to visit Dave's parents in Virginia (SW) which is about a 9 hour drive from here. I plan to stop there for three days and then on to Savannah to meet my parents who will be down there buying a house. They are retiring we have family in Savannah)and I want to go down and see what the house is like. Then I am driving home with a quick stop at Fort Bragg, North Carolina (my Dad was a paratrooper many moons ago and wants to show the base he was stationed at to the kids). We will probably overnight there to break up the trip.
Now Dave is trying to work out taking off some time to drive down to VA with me because his parents (who are not huge fans of mine to begin with) are completely losing there minds about me being alone with the children on the road (gasp!) in the dark!! They are calling him at work and generally driving us nuts about it. He would normally take of the time no problem but he happens to have a mandatory SEC filing due that week which might throw a monkey wrench into his taking a few days off.
I am very comfortable taking the kids alone but apparantly my abilities don't shine through. Where are these people when I need to go to Costco. I'd rather drive all five kids to Virginia than spend an hour in Costco with them !

I am actually one of those people who does not like the idea of traveling alone with the children. I think it's partly due to the fact that I am NOT good at long distance drives and am afraid that I might get too sleepy at the wheel after too many hours. It is also partly due to the fact that I know my limitations in the area of patience. Traveling makes me cranky at times. For the good of the children, it's pretty important that I have my wonderful husband there for balance, support, help, etc. It makes for a much more pleasant experience for us all! 
On the other hand, I had my first experience of touring a city alone with the 5 children recently. We joined dh on a business trip to Philadelphia a few weeks ago. He was busy all day, so I went solo with the kids for sightseeing. We stayed downtown and walked for miles for each of 3 days, seeing many of the sights we had not seen before. We particularly enjoyed the art museum. What a great place to see while studying the middle ages! Overall it was a big success, so I am no longer so intimidated by the idea of solo trips.
