We are pretty sure that each time we have come down with some illness it is a result of our "socialization" at CCD/Sunday school.
The children aren't learning much at the classes - which are OK, just a tad shallow. Our children are always either answering the questions, or being told to be quiet and let others answer.
The only reason we are doing it is for some level of socialization, and I am the teacher for year 6.
I don't know whether it is worth bothering with. It has been said that socialization is just sharing "bad habits and bad germs".
Technically classes are required to receive the sacraments, but considering the parish priest is very rule bound as to ages, we won't be having any in the next two years anyway.
Does anyone else attend CCD classes?

Three of my six are ccd age. Only 2 attend, we are thinking of dropping this next year.
We began with my oldest(now in 6th grade) for the about the same reason-to get involved in the parish. She also is not learning anything, and basically this year most of the time has been spent watching the teacher discipline a group of boys.
On the other hand my 2nd grader is in a wonderful class.
The teacher is the godfather of our 5th child. He is a very holy man and dd has learned alot and he has helped her grow in her faith. This time of year-right before first communion-he is taking the children in groups of 4 to Eucharistic Adoration for a half hour.
But after 2nd grade it sort of goes down hill. My son chose not to return after 3rd grade.
Our classes are on Sundays in between the 9 and11:30 masses. I don't like this also. Our Sundays become too rushed.
We are really praying about what the Lord wants us to do next year- I will pray for your family also.

David,
<smile> I know what you mean about the "socialization bug." We've experienced the same thing here.
Unfortunately, our dd has no playmates her age. We are sending our eldest to preschool CCD on Sunday mornings purely for the socialization. She has been asking about attending CCD for first grade as well. Dh and I will send her there with the idea of her meeting other children her age. It is something that is important to her. We've had a few tears shed here about not having any friends other than her sisters.

We don't, although we have a great DRE and he uses excellent texts. We teach the faith at home and we are involved in many other things at our parish. For us, CCD would be just another activity that interupts family life.
'Bad germs' are hard to avoid no matter what you do.  But I do think the closed room of a classroom may be condusive to the spread of them.
Our children get plenty of opportunity to socialize after Mass at coffee and donuts, parish and homeshool functions and get togethers with friends.
For us, the most important socialization is within our family and in activities with other families. ('course we haven't hit those teen years yet so I can't say how it will fall into place then.)

We attend CCD for sacrament prep. Our parish requires two years for First Communion/Confession prep, and two years again for Confirmation prep in high school. So all the kids go through those four years.
The other years, we do it on a case by case basis. A couple of years in the past I've had my kids in there so they could see other Catholic kids on a regular basis. A couple of years, I sent them because there was a good person teaching the class, someone I wanted my kids to learn from.
We live about 20 miles from the church and one of my kids is medically fragile and gets every bug going, so that gives us a pretext. Also, our tiny homeschool group has a weekly Rosary and Stations so we get some Catholic socialization that way. It is mostly outside so we avoid the closed-door bug transmission situation.

My children ten and younger attend the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program appropriate to their ages. I consider it a great gift and a true blessing. It is really unique and not entirely duplicable at home so I'm glad for its availability. That said, I'm not thrilled with the effects of socialization that go with it both in terms of emotional and physical health. Until I can truthfully replicate the CGS experience, I will accept the drawbacks but the good does outweigh the negative....

I *knew* that having a "bunch" of kids and being open to life was the best socialization for the children. I think attending CCD is really convincing ourselves that this is so, by comparing with other non-homeschooled families.
We find it interesting how our children react to the other children in CCD. It is more a sense of wonder at their lack of knowledge or desire for that knowledge that really surpises them. It isn't superiority or pride - just suprise.
I think I'll have to order "Love and Responsibility".

We don't attend CCD classes except when required for sacrament prep. When we have participated, the "socialization" that the kids received was unneccesary, even on the rare occasion when it was "positive." It's just not worth it to us to expose the kids to the germs and attitudes when they (and we) don't get anything out of it (not to mention that it's on a weeknight after bedtime so crankiness ensues). Our children participate in swim team (which they do together, same day, same time) and gather with friends and attend Daily Mass often enough to socialize. They have a few minutes with friends after Mass on Sundays too...and they spend all day every day with each other...socializing!

We don't do CCD, but we do take baby wipes with us when we go to the pediatrician or are ever in a closed room with lots of little children. I have my children use a wipe to clean hands before getting into the car. This avoids some germs spread from putting hands in mouth.
