Hi ladies,
As I announced recently, we are expecting in early January. In general I'm doing well, some extra hunger in the morning and at night, and then easily eating too much and feeling sick. Basically normal for me. But what I don't recall is being this TIRED. Every afternoon around 2 or 3 I just want to crawl into bed and can barely do anything. Its not really possible to nap, though I did a tiny bit yesterday with the almost 2 year old while the older ones watched a show. But I don't want to do that every day. I take a prenatal vitamin and have a basically healthy diet. We avoid almost all processed foods, but I do eat wheat and dairy and some white sugar, like when I make pancakes or something. But we cook everything from scratch other than bread and tortillas, chips. All main meals. So healthy compared to average America. But I don't do a bunch of specific supplements. I just haven't had the time to research it. My research and reading is usually homeschooling related. Is there something that would help with this? Do I just need to go to bed earlier? i do have some coffee in the morning but I'm trying not to in the afternoon, plus, it upsets my stomach later in the day. Please, advice! :)

I would look at your prenatal vitamin to start with. I had no idea until I got a new midwife (because we moved) that the higher dose vitamins would make such a huge difference in how I felt. There's several. I generally use NF Formulas Prenatal Forte but the Rainbow Light system (6 pills a day not the 1 a day) is very comparable. But I did go from desperately needing a nap every day to within about a week of consistently taking the higher dose to not even being much tired during that time.
And yes your sleep needs will go up with pregnancy anyway so you may be needing more sleep at night. I know when I am pregnant or nusing a baby that wakes 2+ times a night that I have to plan for more like 9hrs sleep (pregnant and nursing 9.5hrs)
And you wouldn't be the first mama to need to nap with younger kids. Your 10 yr old can be trained to watch the others if you're right there and just need to be woken up to help.
The nice thing about the higher dose prenatals is that it's still a single product and while you may be takign them more often it's still all from one bottle

Amanda, you have my sympathy. Try to go easy on yourself during this first trimester. You might find it helpful to have dc rest while you rest! When I was younger and suffered from early pregnancy exhaustion or migraines I would declare "siesta time". Dc learned to respect our rest times and accepted it as our family quiet time. Any dc I felt would not be safe in a room by themselves, rested in the same room with me. They could have safe snacks, quiet toys and books and would rest on the floor, in a playard or on our kingsize bed next to me. I would lock the bedroom door with an old fashioned hook lock at the top of the door if I was concerned about little ones straying. Our children learned that they were expected to be quiet during those times and it was truly a godsend when I just couldn't function.
Would tea be a gentler pick me up when you're dragging in the afternoon? Too many carbs at lunch can sometimes make a person more tired. A light snack of cheese or yogurt with crackers or fruit mid afternoon might help sustain your energy levels through the rest of the afternoon. The recommendation for keeping blood sugars stable is six light meals a day, which averages out to about every 2 or 2.5 hours. If all else fails, it helps to remind yourself the first trimester will be over before you know it. Just keep thinking, "This too shall pass"! Praying for you and your little one.

I'm due with #6 in January too. I mandate siesta time. It is needed and I've let go of some of my ideals to make it happen. (Like allowing movies sometimes during this time. My oldest is not yet 11, but he and the others know the drill. Bolt the doors, don't answer the phone or door. Everyone is quiet... Usually in the attic playing Legos or some such. Once you make it routine, they'll expect it.
And yes, check your vitamins. You need lots of B vitamins! And magnesium!
Finally, with regards to nausea. This is the first pregnancy ever where I'm not a crumpled heap on the couch due to nausea. And I know it's because I've been protein bingeing... aiming for 80-100 grams a day. Yes it's a lot but it makes a HUGE difference in health and energy. 20-30 of those grams are consumed right before bedtime so I wake up stable and am able to get out of bed... a major breakthrough for me! So pack in your nuts, cheese, yogurt, meats, fish, cottage cheese, beans, etc. it is so worth it.

The fatigue was bad for me in the first trimester. It is always bad, but this pregnancy hit so much harder. I was diagnosed with a Vit D deficiency, and I do think that played a part in the fatigue. It also lasted longer than usual, though I did get a small window of energy in the middle, but now, it is rearing its head again as I approach the home stretch.
I do think the Vit D supplements helped, and I've also been taking. B complex in addition to my prenatal.
