A long time ago there was a thread about nursing pads, and I think that the consensus was that the Danish wool pads were best. Am I right about that?

If so, I'm wondering how many to order. I often have a problem with producing too much milk along with a lot of leakage.

I got two pairs of those pads based on that thread! I am a very heavy leaker, and should have gotten the extra-thick pads instead of regular. I would still leak right through the regular ones, and then they needed to be washed out more often. I think I probably would have been okay with 2 pairs if I'd gotten the thicker ones.

You are absolutely right, Angela -

Here is one of my FAVORITE threads of all time - Nursing Pads - which goes into great detail on the glories of the Danish wool nursing pads.

I just got mine out of storage from my last nursing baby in anticipation of this new one.

I'm a heavy leaker and a very heavy milk producer and regular nursing pads just do not cut it for me. Also, because of my heavy milk supply, if baby so much as hiccups in variation from her regular nursing routine, I am a candidate for a clogged duct or mastitis. The warming properties of the wool pads along with the normal massaging/pumping intervention you do when you have a clogged duct or suspect the beginning of mastitis kept me from having a single infection with my last nursing baby!

In short, I'd climb to the top of the highest mountain to proclaim the benefits and goodness of these nursing pads. I really would!! Worth every cent in my opinion!! I'd skip every other nursing/baby gadget, pillow, frou-frou accoutrement...just to have these!

Enjoy reading through that FABULOUS Danish wool nursing pad thread, Angela! A C-L-A-S-S-I-C!

Yes, thank you! That was the one I was looking for.

I have all the same problems, and am *really* hoping to avoid my typical mastitis-in-the-first-two-weeks problem this time. After reading back through the other thread, I'm thinking that maybe I should order 3 pairs of the regular... or perhaps get a tear-dropped shaped pair. I think the extra-thick would just be too bulky (and make me look even bigger!), especially if I'm going to wear them as the weather warms?

Your early nursing sounds a lot like mine, Angela. I'd recommend 2 pairs (just because they're so expensive) - one regular and one in the teardrop shape. The teardrop is very large, but it's great for wearing at night and targeting special areas, especially if you suspect an issue. Then, keep your regular pair for wearing regularly. And you can wash and alternate between them.

And just mental note that if you do decide you need an additional pair, you can order with Prime through Amazon.

The bulk issue is why I got the regular ones, but then I still ended up with wet shirts all the time. I think I would have had to go up a bra size with the thicker ones, but that is probably what I should have done.

Have LOVED mine through two babies!!!! Best baby-thing I ever bought besides slings/carriers, etc. I wish I would've had them with my earlier babies.

I would eat RICE for a month to save up for these things, so I'm right there with Jen....

Did you see the Ekstra ones??? I had one regular pair and then an Ekstra pair....they weren't teardrop, but round....but just held much more milk. I'll go see if I can find them.

And, I didn't need more than two pair...they dried fast, even in wet, cold Seattle.

OK, so I had a small-Ekstra (felted wool ones) and a size Medium-softline. I'm a size e cup when nursing.

I hesitated about the Ekstra b/c we were so damp in the winter--seattle---and they say they take longer to dry...but I really didn't have a problem.   I put them over the heat vent and they were dry in the am. and that was ONLY when it was particularily cold....otherwise they just sat out and dried.

I def. leaked more in the softline.....and would wear them around the house. If I went out, I wore the Ekstra.

If I had to do it over again, I'd get an original pair and an Ekstra pair. And, I'd increase my size in the Ekstra to Medium. I remember thinking "well, I'm getting more absorption, so I don't need the coverage, so i'll get the smaller size, since i'm in between sizes." But, I did someimes leak in the Ekstra, but not because the pad was full....but because it wasn't covering enough or in the right place, b/c it was on the small size. The idea behind these is that they really are covering so much more of the br--st.

I think I wanted the heavy-absorption without the bulk, so that's why I got the Ekstra.

Quote:
Oval (Teardrop) - intended for women with repetitive plugged ducts in area of armpit.

Def. go by their cup size recommendations....and err on the big side...so go up a size if you're in between and a heavy leaker.

And, don't hesitate to get the Ekstra....they SEEM bigger/thicker...but really when you get them IN the bra.....they aren't that different in the grand scheme of things, unless you're extremely skinny with an extremely large chest wearing low-cut, tight knit shirts while nursing.

Well, I guess life does go on...

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I decided to order the Ekstra, one in medium and another tear-drop shaped, at least for early nursing. I think I will probably have to add a regular pair this summer, though, when it gets hot and my milk production evens out a little.

Now just waiting! 3 weeks to go, at the most!

I love these things , too! I have had almost zero plugged milk ducts, thrush, etc. when using these nursing, when I used to have them *all the time*. The ONLY time I do have these issues anymore is when I'm first preg. and these wonderful pads can't change my internal makeup at that time. It has been such a better nursing experience since finding these nursing pads mentioned here at 4Real! A huge thank you to those whho mentioned them!

Ok, another question... my mom just ran these through the washing machine with regular detergent (dye and fragrance free). Will that hurt them if it happens once?

No clue! You'll have to tell us! It may affect their smoothness since I think you're essentially felting the wool. ??? But, I really don't know enough about wool to know what will happen except that you're typically not supposed to just wash it.

I'd say, pull them out of the wash (or maybe they've already been through the whole cycle??), rinse them well, roll them flat to dry them in a towel, sqeezing out excess moisture as much as you can, let them finish drying...and then just roll with it! They might shrink a little, but I'm betting they'll be just fine.

Well, I did rescue them from the dryer. I have a hunch that would be a lot worse than the wash.

It doesn't seem to have affected the wool much, if at all... which is a great relief! I'm almost to 2 weeks and have felt a little like maybe I was on the verge of mastitis a few times, but so far, things have been much better. Holding my breath for a little while longer, though.

Yes, the dryer is worse, I think. I knitted my son a pair of mittens years ago, and put them through the washer a few times and they were fine (they were also superwash wool) but the one time they snuck into the dryer, they came out sized for a toddler.
